Kaylyn Kyle: Leading Canadian Women's Soccer Player Reveals her Success Mantra "Believe in yourself "
Kaylyn Kyle is a Canadian Soccer Player who plays midfield for the Canadian
Women's National Team, and Portland Thorns FC in the National Women's Soccer
League (NWSL) in the USA. She was raised in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where she
attended Bishop James Mahoney High School.
Growing up Kaylyn was a multisport athlete competing in gymnastics, diving,
baseball, basketball and volleyball before she made the decision to follow her
dream and focus her energy completely on her soccer career.
At 9 years old, Kyle recalls being in her Mom's office at work on a rare
afternoon she had off from school. She remembers her mother handing her a post
it note and a pen and asking her, "What do you want to be when you grow up?"
Kyle didn't have to think twice. She took the note and on it scribbled her name,
placed the number 6 beside it, and wrote Team Canada.
She began playing in Saskatoon's youth soccer organization in the Hollandia
zone, before going on to represent her province playing for Team Saskatchewan in
National Competitions, the Western Canada Games, and the 2005 Canada Summer
Games in Regina, Saskatchewan.
In 2006, Kaylyn attended the University of Saskatchewan where she played in the
Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) league, making 14 appearances for the
Huskies. After a year with the team, she left the program to focus on her
professional career playing with the Vancouver Whitecaps, and joined the
Canadian Women's National Soccer Team on a fulltime basis, committing herself to
the U20 program.
Kyle was named Saskatchewan Soccer Association Youth Female Player of The Year
in 2004, 2005 and 2006, and Senior Female Player of the Year in 2010 and 2011.
She received the Saskatoon Kinsmen Athlete of the Year Award in 2011.
Kyle joined the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2006 and played a total of six seasons
with their women's program from 2006 to 2012.
In 2009, Kyle played with the Pitea IF in Sweden's top-flight women's league,
Damallsvenskan. She made 13 appearances for the team On 11 January 2013, as part
of the NWSL Player Allocation, Kyle joined the Seattle Reign FC in the National
Women's Soccer League (NWSL). After playing a few games as a midfielder, Kyle
shifted to a center back position and helped strengthen a young defensive line.
As a defender, Kyle was a leading scorer for the Reign scoring three goals
during the 2013 season. Kyle made 21 appearances for the squad, starting in
nineteen matches and tallying 1,752 minutes played.
In 2015 Kyle signed with Portland Thorns FC in the National Women's Soccer
League, joining fellow Canadians Christine Sinclair and Rhian Wilkinson. On
October 26, 2015, Kyle was acquired by the Orlando Pride along with Alex Morgan
from Portland Thorns FC. The Orlando Pride joined the NWSL for the 2016 season,
and are the tenth team to be added to the league through expansion.
Kyle became a part of Canada's U17 Soccer Program in early 2004. She went on to
represent Canada on an international stage while playing with the women's U20
program from 2005-2008.
The dream Kaylyn wrote down on that post it note all those years ago came true
in 2008 when she earned her first cap for the Senior Women's Team in a 4-0 loss
to the United States. She spent most of that year travelling with Team Canada's
U20 and Senior Teams. She played games in China, Chile, France and Mexico. In
the 2008 FIFA U-20 World Cup Kyle set up the winning goal against Congo, DR. In
total, she played 20 games for her country that year.
Kyle was a member of the Canadian Women's National Team that competed at the
2011 FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany. At the 2011 Pan American Games Kaylyn
won Gold, as part of the team that defeated Brazil in the final match to secure
top spot in the tournament.
Kyle's Olympic dreams came true when she won bronze at the London 2012 Olympic
Games, playing a prominent role throughout the tournament in Canada's midfield.
Canada defeated France 1-0 in the bronze medal game on 9 August 2012, and was
presented their medal in the iconic Wembley Arena in London that same evening.
