People in state of high emotion 15% better able to detect sweet, sour and bitter flavours

(Ivanhoe Newswire) – Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have discovered that the popular artificial sweetener, Splenda (or sucralose), can modify how the body handles sugar.

M. Yanina Pepino, PhD, research assistant professor of medicine, and colleagues analyzed the sweetener in 17 severely obese people with a BMI of over 42 who do not have diabetes and don’t use artificial sweeteners regularly. Study participants received either water or sucralose to drink before they consumed a glucose challenge test.

“When study participants drank sucralose, their blood sugar peaked at a higher level than when they drank only water before consuming glucose. Insulin levels also rose about 20 percent higher. So the artificial sweetener was related to an enhanced blood insulin and glucose response,” M. Yanina Pepino, PhD, was quoted as saying.
