Mobile breast cancer detection unit to be introduced in India

[Health News]: London, Mar 13 : A charity dinner held at the House of Commons in London has raised over 12,500 pounds for introduction of a mobile breast cancer detection unit in India. The dinner, held in the member’s dining room of House of Commons at the invitation of Keith Vaz, MP, former Minister; Lord Navnit Dholakia, Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democratic Party in the House of Lords and A P S Chawla, Chairman, ROKO Cancer Appeal, was attended by Bollywood actress Kiron Kher, Bombay Dreams leading lady Priya Kalidas, Britain’s Treasury Minister Stephen Timms, and Shadow Attorney General Dominic Greave and NRI industrialist Karan Bilimoria. Speaking on the occasion, A P S Chawla, Chairman of the ROKO Cancer Appeal said the MKC Trust, set up in memory of his first wife, who fell a victim to breast cancer, has decided to raise 100,000 pounds for establishing a mobile breast cancer detection unit in India. “It is a project, which will bring the benefit of early detection of breast cancer leading to a possible cure by the modern medical advancement,” Chawla said. Vaz said according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, which is part of the WHO, there were about 79,000 women per year affected by breast cancer in India in 2001 and over 80,000 women in 2002. One out of every 30 women living in Indian metros would develop breast cancer during her lifetime, according to Dr R A Badwe, head of surgical oncology, Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai. Each year 80,000 women in India get breast cancer leading to 30,000 deaths. PTI
