The best way to transform your body into a lean, sexy, fit and fabulous machine, is by incorporating strength training into your workout routine. Not only does it help maintain a healthy body both physically and mentally, but it allows you to shape and build strong lean muscles while supporting weight loss. So… do you need to hit the gym and lift weights to accomplish this… NO! While there are many ways to achieve these goals, incorporating Calisthenics is one of the best tried and true options.
What is Calisthenics?
Calisthenics is a form of exercise that focuses on core strength and resistance training with your own bodyweight and utilizes little to no equipment. It consists of strategic movement-based full body exercises that in turn challenges you to maximize results.
As a former Level 10 Nationally ranked Gymnast and lifelong athlete, I know first-hand the extreme benefits of calisthenics, especially among women. Rather than weight-training to build lean muscle, we challenged our bodies daily thru intense calisthenics-based body conditioning as well as plyometric and flexibility training, which helped us build strength, stamina, agility, flexibility, balance, and coordination. This prepared us tremendously to grow and excel in our sport and was one of the most important components to our training.
Some standard examples of calisthenics include: Jumping Jacks, Squats, Lunges, Pull-Ups, Push-Ups, Crunches, Dips, Leg Lifts, Calf-Raises, Sprints, V-Ups, and Handstands. These exercises can all be performed alone as well as with modifications and variations to enhance the workout.
With all the raging fit trends that have saturated the fitness industry over the years, traditional calisthenics has become a thing of the past and labeled as “old school.” However, it is quickly regaining popularity. Calisthenics has been around FOREVER and athletes continue to use it because it WORKS!
Here Are Some Benefits To Calisthenics:
- No Equipment Necessary
- Ideal for All Ages
- Effective for Weight Loss
- Build and Shape Muscles
- Enhance Strength and Stamina
- Enhance Agility and Functionality
- Improves Mind and Body Coordination

One of the best things about Calisthenics is that you can ROCK these workouts at any age! The younger kids can start the better, and continuing thru your later years proves highly beneficial for your overall well-being and fitness goals. Of course, working in gradual progressions is advised for everyone and only training within your own individual means safely and effectively.
*As with any new workout routine, consulting with your physician is advised and seeking the help of a trained professional/trainer is recommended.
