Brenda Martinez: World Champion in 4x800 m Relay and World Record Holder in Distance Medley Relay Reveals her Success mantra "Hard work does Pay off "
Ms. Namita Nayyar: Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that
you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?
Ms. Brenda Martinez:
No I dont have a special diet at all. I try to cutback
on my carbs and sugars and just try and eat healthy most of the time. My husband
rewards me after great workouts with a In & Out burger and soda, but this is
rare.
Ms. Namita Nayyar: Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and
budding girl athletes who all are your fans, they shall like to know from you,
what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in the field of women
athletics ?
Ms. Brenda Martinez: Hard work does pay off. I have been running since I was
5 years old and my dream would be represent my country (United States of
America) at the Olympic Games. I'm 28 years old now and I will get that
opportunity in July of 2016. It has taken me 23 years to be in this situation to
finally have an opportunity to be an Olympian. "Never give up and never allow
anyone to discourage you from your dreams!"
Ms. Namita Nayyar: How did you feel before and after your memorable win of
Bronze medal at time you were at the sixth place when you rounded the bend into
the homestretch of the 800-meter final at the 2013 IAAF World Championships in
Moscow. A space opened up in lane one, you dug deep and crossed the line in
third place-the first American woman to ever medal in the event?
Ms. Brenda Martinez: I couldn't believe that lane 1 opened up. It was one of
those rare things that only occur once in a lifetime. I knew I had to try and
take lane 1 and it was the best decision I ever made. I ended up wining the
Bronze medal and running a personal best time of 1:57.91. At the beginning of
the year no one would even have picked me to finish top 5 at USA's and I ended
up doing something very special at the World Championships.
Ms. Namita Nayyar: You story of life is an inspiration to million of young
girl athletes worldwide who due to paucity of resources, tough situations and
hostile environment, even when bundled with exceptional talent have been unable
to achieve anything in their athletic career. You like a warrior fought all
situations and came out victorious to become a World Relay 4X 800 meters
Champion. Kindly provide an insight into your struggles and how you were so
mentally tough to win out to become a world-champion?
Ms. Brenda Martinez: I come from a poor upbringing, my father worked 2 jobs
and my mother worked long hours. My older sister and brother would take care of
me. My parents sacrificed a lot in order for my siblings and I to have a roof
over our heads and food on the table. When I was in middle school and high
school I was picked on because I didn't have new clothes for school and my daily
school shoes were my training shoes.
I was very grateful for everything my parents did for me. I didn't care what
other kids said to me. I was always so proud of my parents. All I cared about
was running and school, when my mother would get home from work she would take
me to Barnes and Noble to study for 3 hours every day. School wasn't easy for me
I would need to read my assignments over and over to absorb it.
When I graduated from University of California, Riverside and I wanted to
compete for a few post collegiate groups I was turned away and rejected and told
I wasn't good enough. These coaches are supposed to be here to help develop
American Distance running but they turned me away. I'm thankful these coaches
turned me away because it gave me an opportunity to be coached by the best coach
in the World, Dr. Joe Vigil.
Ms. Namita Nayyar: You won gold at the 2014 IAAF World Relays - Women's 4 x
800 meters relay. Your winning Team comprising of Geena Gall, Ajee' Wilson,
Chanelle Price and yourself, and also made North, Central American and Caribbean
record. Elaborate your experience on this exceptional performance?
Ms. Brenda Martinez: It was the first time that Bahamas were hosting the
IAAF World Relays Championships, I knew I had to be a part of it. It was an
amazing experience anchoring TEAM USA to an American record and 1st place
finish. The crowd in the Bahamas was so loud and exciting. I fed of all the
energy in the stands. It was an amazing experience!
Ms. Namita Nayyar: You won Bronze medal 2013 at Moscow World Championships
in 800m, Gold medal at 2014 Nassau World Relay Championships in 4x800 m relay
and Silver medal at 2014 Nassau World Relay Championships in 4x1500 m relay.
What responsibility these wins bestow upon you in your future efforts and
activities in the field of athletics?
Ms. Brenda Martinez: I knew after accomplishing all these awards there would
be a greater pressure on me to keep running faster. In track and field there are
always new athletes being developed and its a tough sport to compete in. I knew
I had to step up my training. I try and just better myself a little bit more
everyday in order to become a better athlete. Becoming a better sister, friend,
wife, daughter all these little things will help me improve in my sport.
Ms. Namita Nayyar: Who has been your biggest influence and motivation in
your path to success?
Ms. Brenda Martinez: My biggest influence would have to be my coach Dr. Joe
Vigil, he is the greatest human being I have ever met. He is the kindest, smart
person I have ever met. He has made me believe I'm better then really I am. He
pushed me to new heights in training and life. He isn't just my running coach
but he is also my life coach. He has taught me to be the best person I can be.
Ms. Namita Nayyar: You with your husband, Carlos Handler recruit
post-collegiate athletes to join your 'Big Bear Track Club'. Through this you
are dedicated to providing younger athletes opportunities that you didn't have
while still competing at the highest level. This endeavor is dear to your heart,
tell us how you have been able to achieve and quench your thirst of giving back
to the society through this endeavors of your?
Ms. Brenda Martinez: Too many athlete slip through the cracks for one reason
or another and my husband and I didn't want this to occur to anyone else like it
almost did to me.
My husband is very passionate for coaching and developing athletes. He asked me
if he could bring on a guy he knew from a previous conversation he had with Dr.
Joe Vigil. His name was Boris Berian and he had dropped out of college and was
working at Mcdonalds to make a living and try to continue running.
Carlos saw something in him and wanted to bring him on to the team and develop
him into one of the World's best athletes. Boris had respectable personal best
in the 800 meters of 1:48.9. Long story short Boris accepted Carlos invitation
to join the group in December 2014 and by June 2015 Boris Berian had run the 4th
fastest time in the World in 1:43.34 and was signed by a shoe company as a
professional runner. Greatest can be achieved when you trust the process and
have an unshatterable will in what you are doing!
Ms. Namita Nayyar: With exceptional hard work you are credited with all your
achievements. Do you believe that does the hand of Providence (Supreme Being)
played a role in your success?
Ms. Brenda Martinez: Of course I do. My husband and I always say GOD is
always watching over us. Everything that has occurred to me is because GOD has a
plan for me. I always work as hard as I can but at the end of the day I always
pray and ask God to look after us.
Ms. Namita Nayyar: What you wish to say about the website Womenfitness.net
and message for its visitors?
Ms. Brenda Martinez: Thank you for this wonderful opportunity to be
interviewed by www.womenfitness.net. I will end this interview with one of my
favorite quotes by Brian Tracy "Between you and every goal that you wish to
achieve, there is a series of obstacles, and the bigger the goal, the bigger the
obstacles. Your decision to be, have and do something out of the ordinary
entails facing difficulties and challenges that are out of the ordinary as well.
Sometimes your greatest asset is simply your ability to stay with it longer than
anyone else."
