Angela Maurer a long-distance swimmer from Germany is five times swimming world cup winner. She is in conversation with Namita Nayyar President Women Fitness
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
You must have started swimming at an early age and as your first major success came in 1996 when you won your first German 5km championship and later you reached the pinnacle of success by winning gold at 2009 World Championships in Women’s Swimming 25 km open water at Rome. What factors you consider were responsible that made you achieve that?
Ms. Angela Maurer:
Same as for all the other sportsmen, it is the ambition that drives me- the willpower to reach my goals. I can only handle the tough training because of the energy and strength I receive from my fans, partners, family and my coach/ spouse.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
You have career in competitive swimming that is close to twenty years, you have swam the equivalent of one and a half times around the world, and when added up, your training load amounts to swimming non-stop for two-and-a-half months per year. You are nothing short of a phenomenon. Tell us how you are able to achieve the tenacity, perseverance and discipline over such a long number of years?
Ms. Angela Maurer:
Thank you very much! I don’t see myself as a phenomenon – I do train: yes- and it is exhausting: yes- but in the end it is a great challenge which I accept because it’s my passion. Every person- no matter whether it’s a sports person or not- who has found something that brings together your heart and soul is willing to give everything for his/her passion- this is how I feel- with the encouragement of my loved ones I am willing to give everything for my sport.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
In 2004 and 2005 you were focused on giving birth to you son Maxim, but you returned from your maternity break stronger than ever. In 2006 you won gold medals in both the 10km and 25km events at the European Championships in Budapest, and less than a month later you garnered your first 25km world title at the World Open Water Championships in Naples. What was your fitness regime for recovery after such an event in the life of a sportsperson ?
Ms. Angela Maurer:
After the birth of Maxim it was clear that I either had to come back as a star or give up the swimming. Since the open water became an olympic discipline in 2008 it became my goal to be part of the Olympic games. I believed in the achievement of this goal and therefore I conquered my training with a lot of willpower!
