Christina Obergfoll, World Champion Javelin Throw : A Perfect Success Story
Christina Obergfoll is Javelin Throw World Champion 2013, Diamond League overall
title, second in Olympic Games 2012, second in European Championships 2012,
Total Diamond League victory in 2011 and Silver 2010 European Championships.
Christina Obergfll was born on 22nd August 1981 in Lahr, Baden-Wrttemberg. She
is a German athlete, competing in the javelin throw. At the 2005 World
Championships in Athletics Obergfll won the silver medal with a European record
(70.03m) by finishing second behind Osleidys Menndez, who set a new world
record at the same event.
Obergfll finished 4th at the 2006 European Athletics Championships in
Gothenburg.
With 70.20m, she improved her own European record at the European Cup Super
League meeting in Munich on 23 June 2007.
At the 2008 Summer Olympics she won the bronze medal, but lost the European
record to Mariya Abakumova and Barbora potkov. Obergfll threw the third best
mark of the season in 2010 (68.63 m) at the DKB-duels in Elstal. At the 2012
Olympics in London she had her greatest success, when she won a silver medal.
Javelin Olympic silver medalist, Christina Obergfll, is in a relationship with
Boris Henry. He won twice the bronze medal (1995 and 2003) and has a personal
record of 90,44m thrown in Linz, Austria. Since October 2008 Boris is the head
coach for the men javelin throwers. In September of this year they are getting
married and they still do not know which last name they will take. Therefore,
Christina and Boris made up a bet. Their bet is about who can keep the last name
after the marriage.
If Christina, who has a personal best of 70,03m, wins the gold Medal at the IAAF
World Championships in Moscow they will keep Obergfll as their last name. This
might be really tough, especially after the qualification this morning. Maria
Abakumowa produced the best qualification mark with 69,09m and will fight for
the gold medal as well.
In Moscow, Russia it has finally worked again with 69.05 meters on Sunday and
Offenburgerin their first international gold medal bestowed. The start list
could not be set more dramatic: Christina Obergfll was the last of the twelve
finalists off right in front of their hometown favorite and defending champion
Mariya Abakumova. But this time it was the German who served up a litter of
Russian: 69.05 meters, the fifth-best distance in the long and successful career
, the 31-year-olds.
After six international medals Offenburgerin was finally allowed to cheer about
gold, no one could counter more. After her last attempt she fell on the grass on
my knees, then her future husband Boris Henry in his arms and then went to the
well-deserved victory lap.
Christina Obergfll (LG Offenburg) siad: " It is a liberation and a reward for
all the years in which I worked hard. I've never been kicked out in the
qualification. I've never really failed. It was not as nice as in Helsinki, but
also not bad. Now it's been just the little bit of luck. I have just earned. And
I think that I treat all the other athletes ".
