Trisha Chetty is a South African cricketer. She has played two Tests, and made over one hundred limited-overs appearances for South Africa since 2007. Initially she batted at number seven or eight, but she was quickly promoted up the order and from mid-2008 onwards has been opening the batting. She along with Shandre Fritz set the record for the highest ever opening stand of 170 runs in the history of WT20I ( Women’s Twenty20 International) history. She also holds the record of highest dismissal by a wicketkeeper in Women’s ODI.
In February 2018, she played in her 100th Women’s One Day International match for South Africa, against India. The following month, she was one of fourteen players to be awarded a national contract by Cricket South Africa ahead of the 2018–19 seasons. In October 2018, she was named in South Africa’s squad for the 2018 ICC Women’s World Twenty20 tournament in the West Indies.
In September 2019, she was named in the Fvan der Merwe XI squad for the inaugural edition of the Women’s T20 Super League in South Africa. In January 2020, she was named in South Africa’s squad for the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia. On 23 July 2020, Chetty was named in South Africa’s 24-woman squad to begin training in Pretoria, ahead of their tour to England.
Women Fitness President Ms. Namita Nayyar catches up with Trisha Chetty exceptionally talented, record holder South African cricketer here she talks about her workout, diet, and traits of a successful cricket player.
Namita Nayyar:
You have made two Tests, and over one hundred limited-overs appearances for South Africa since 2007. Walk us through your spectacular journey and share what all led you to take up cricket as an opener?
Trisha Chetty:
I first started playing at school with the boys team in what is now known as KFC mini-cricket. I went to play at club level which paved the way for my inclusion in the KwaZulu-Natal women’s teams. My performances at provincial level earned me a call up to national camps and the South African Under-19s team. In 2007 I made my debut for South Africa at the age of 18 which was a dream come true. I started batting at number 8 and worked my way to become an opener for the last 10 years. I was recently moved back down to number 8 but for me personally it’s an honour to represent the South Africa no matter where I am in the batting line-up.
Namita Nayyar:
You along with Shandre Fritz set the record for the highest ever opening stand of 170 runs in the history of WT20I history. You also hold the record of highest dismissal by a wicketkeeper in Women’s ODI. Share a memorable incident that has stayed with you over the years and served as a lesson?
Trisha Chetty:
Playing for as long as I have for my country I have many memorable moments, some funny, some disappointing and some amazing. There are three that stand out for me when asked this question.
One was beating New Zealand in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in (year) where I did well with the gloves to take an amazing catch and we won that game and moved into the semi-finals.
Next was a disappointing game against England during the 50-over World Cup where I didn’t perform well behind the stumps against and we went on to losingthat match. That loss hurt. The feeling of letting my team down spurred me on to work harder on my skills and fitness to avoid it happening again.
I was lucky enough to get the opportunity again when I was selected to play in the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia earlier this year. It was a good tour with the gloves and I was really happy with the teams and my own performance – especially after winning the opening game against England.

Namita Nayyar:
Introduce us to a day in your life. Your morning begins with.
Trisha Chetty:
My day starts with a cup of coffee or cappuccino and cuddles with my little beagle. I then have my breakfast and workout based on the latest programme from our team trainer. The rest of the day will depend on my mood; I’ll watch series, have a braai with friends, go shopping or just catch up with my friends and family.
Namita Nayyar:
Exercises that essentially comprise your workout routine all through? Fivemust-dos stretches to prevent injury?
Trisha Chetty:
As a wicket-keeper I need strong legs so I do a lot of squats, core and running to keep fit.
Stretching is very important and these are some of my top stretches:
- Quad stretches
- Calf stretch
- Leg swings
- hamstring stretch
- figure four stretches
Namita Nayyar:
Diet that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit? Food you love to feast on, two desserts you enjoy eating.
Trisha Chetty:
Luckily for me I don’t have a sweet tooth but when I do crave something sweet I treat myself to dark chocolate. I typically have egg whites and avocado on toast for breakfast. For lunch I have a protein based salad and when I’m a feeling little bit lazy to cook Nandos is my go to!
Namita Nayyar:
Training in extreme weather conditions can show its toll on hair & skin, five tips you follow for skin, and hair care?
Trisha Chetty:
Well I am big on sunblock, I always lather it on during outdoor training sessions and before and during matches. That’s really important for skin care. I have a routine every morning and evening for washing and moisturizing my skin. When it comes to hair care, I find wearing a cap or my helmet when I am out in the middle really helps protect my hair from sun damage and I use a good shampoo and conditioner to maintain.
Namita Nayyar:
Who has been your greatest influence and motivator in your success in the field of your career? Quote, you live by.
Trisha Chetty:
I’ve always enjoyed watching Jonty Rhodes from a young age and that’s why I have number 8 on my South African playing top but as years went by I’ve realized that that my teammates motivate me to be the best I can because we fight together as one on that field and that inspires me and motivates me to play at the best of my ability to help us to get over the line every game. And off the field would be my mum and dad, they’ve been great role models in my life.

Namita Nayyar:
In the current pandemic situation, how do you keep yourself busy while staying at home?
Trisha Chetty:
I am still following a strict training schedule at home, going for runs when I can. I have been following a few TV Series and spending a lot of time with my dog. I have done a few home renovations to keep my mind busy and it has been a lot of fun.
Namita Nayyar:
In January 2020, you were named in South Africa’s squad for the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia. But with the current situation, where everything is being delayed, how are you coping up with that? Training routine you follow.
Trisha Chetty:
We still have a SA training program that we follow and log our hours with our trainer. It is important to keep busy during this time as it is really easy to lose all of the hard work you put in before the lockdown. Especially things like fitness and muscle toning.
Namita Nayyar:
What according to you are the top qualities needed in a player to succeed in a team sport like cricket?
Trisha Chetty:
You need to be humble, cricket is a team sport and you can be the most talented player – but you need the other 10 girls on that park to make your contribution worthwhile. You need to be selfless, have great focus, be mentally strong and be a very hard worker. Because in the same breathe- you can be the one player who brings down the whole team if you are not committed to the cause.
Namita Nayyar:
Social media has gained significance nowadays, how do you use it to inspire your audience?
Trisha Chetty:
I am not as active as I should be on social media. I would love to use it in the future though to post inspiring posts and motivational videos for upcoming sport lovers and cricket lovers. I think it is a brilliant platform to reach fans, curious sport lovers and team mates and you most definitely can make a difference in this regard.
Namita Nayyar:
