Ms. Namita Nayyar:
How do you see your music being incorporated into a woman’s healthy lifestyle?
Ms. Susannah Blinkoff:
I love the idea that I can hear a song on the radio that I’ve never heard before and in less than two minutes, I’m singing along with the chorus. That’s the kind of musical success I aspire to, I really want to make listeners sing along, and while they’re doing that, they end up affirming something positive about life. Especially as women, I think we are so bombarded by images and cultural messages that tell us we are lacking in some way — we need longer eyelashes or smoother skin to be better somehow — and I hope my music can allow someone to feel some peace for a while about wherever they are in their life. I also wrote some good grooves so the tunes are ideal to work out or stretch to.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
What is the role of fitness and healthy eating in your life?
Ms. Susannah Blinkoff:
I was not at all athletic as a kid, but I grew up in New York City so I walked everywhere. I’m still a really fast walker. I moved to Los Angeles after college and that’s when I came to love fitness because there are so many opportunities to be doing stuff outside year round. I love to hike in the hills near my house with friends or with my husband and son. I’ve also done yoga for many years, but I’m still a beginner and I’m not always regular about going. I do Pilates once or twice a week, it makes my body feel so good. And I get on the treadmill about once a week and do sprint intervals to get my heart rate up.
Eating-wise, my family and I are “foodies” meaning we love to go out in L.A. and explore different cuisines, trying all different kinds of food. When we travel, we choose places that have food we want to try. My husband is also an excellent cook, so I eat very well. My tastes are pretty healthy — kale really is my favorite vegetable (massage it raw with olive oil, lemon & salt!) and I’ll choose dark chocolate over a Twinkie — but I’d probably feel a little better if I didn’t eat croissants and cookies and pizza as much as I do. I just really love them and life feels too short to cut out food that gives me such simple pleasure! So I’m always working on moderation in my diet, rather than deprivation.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
What is your favorite kind of workout?
Ms. Susannah Blinkoff:
Besides putting on dance music and dancing around my living room by myself, my passion is tennis. I learned to play in my ’40’s and I absolutely love it (doubles especially) because it’s competitive, fast, and takes a lot of concentration and stamina. I joined a women’s USTA team this past fall and we practice a few times a week. It’s fantastic to find an exercise that I love to do. It doesn’t feel like working out at all.
