Success isn’t determined by one’s physical appearance. That saying holds true and dear to Jamaican dancehall artiste and singer Tifa. Diagnosed with Blount’s disease from an early age she never allowed the illness to prevent her from realizing her dreams and pursuing her musical aspirations.
Women Fitness President joins the artist and singer Tifa for an interesting conversation on her journey into the world of music.
Namita Nayyar:
Diagnosed with Blount’s disease from an early age you never allowed the illness to prevent you from realizing your dreams and pursuing your musical aspirations. Share how you overcame your physical challenges to shine out in the world of music?
Tifa:
I owe it all to my mom! She always reassured me that there was nothing wrong with me and pushed me to pursue my dreams. She was always there after the teasings and bullying to build me right back up. That definitely moulded me for not only the business of music but life in general.
Namita Nayyar:
Your interest in music developed from an early age. With your stepfather being a popular music producer Garfiled ‘Sampalue’ Phillips, you used to watch him and the things he would do musically and the musicians that would come by the house. Throw some light on this & how would you define your journey under his guidance?
Tifa:
I definitely caught the real bug with seeing all this and him being who he was. But the development really came when I was enrolled in the Ashe Caribbean Performing Arts Academy & Ensemble where I studied and performed throughout my whole adolescence in the 3 performing arts. Singing, dancing & acting. I toured and performed extensively as a child with the group. I got the dancehall big seeing him tho.
Namita Nayyar:
In early 2005, you decided to put music first, by recording on your stepfather’s record label Diamond Rush Records. Since then there has been no looking back. Share the challenges you faced uphill? Also your first hit song?
Tifa:
I sang back up on the track. I didn’t wanna use his influence to break. I actually broke on my own.the break actually came when when I linked up with dancehall group Ward 21 when I auditioned for them in a gas station some years later.
