Lace originated in Europe in the 16th century, used as decorations on clothes sleeves. Because of complicated workmanship and high prices, lace was exclusive for royals and dignitaries. In the 18th century, Madame de Pompadour made lace more popular and even the symbol of feminism, for lace seemed tender but also powerful. During the 19th century, lace became the symbol of idealism and romance. Since the 20th century, there have been more and more kinds of lace patterns.
