Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You are a world renown biathlete having reached the pinnacle of success by winning a silver medal in the Individual at 2014 Winter Olympics. Walk us through this spectacular journey and tell us how it all began?

Ms. Selina Gasparin:

I started skiing (alpine) at the age of 2.5 years. That’s what children do in my hometown Pontresina. It was like kinder-garden on skis. Lot of fun. I was always an active child and was always moving. Because I was born with legs and feet turned too much on the inside the doctor recommend to do sports which pushes the feet out. So I was ice skating, did ballet, was riding horse and finally started cross county skiing. Everything was fun but I liked it best on the snow. Sport was like freedom to me and I enjoyed it very deeply because my friends also did it. It was the most social thing I knew. So I went to the club training and racing was even more fun than training.

With the years I made it to the next level and team and it continued to the junior national team of cross country skiing. I never had a dream about becoming a professional. I didn’t even know that was a possibility or a profession. Then it all became more about success and one day I decided that I want to find out how far I can go. I love to push the border and I was just curious how far I can go. And this is still my motivation. I want become better and better and am always curious how high up in the ranking I can reach. At the age of 20 I changed to biathlon. It was more fun and challenging then cross country. I had a feeling that could be my best discipline.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Introduce us to a day in your life, preparing for the Olympics.

Ms. Selina Gasparin:

I wake up around 7am and get ready for training with breakfast and usual stuff. Then at 08:30 am I start my training. Mostly roller skiing combined with shooting. That takes around 2-3h. Then I go home for lunch and rest. I sleep 1-2h. Then I get ready for the next training session. That can be running, cycling, roller skiing or gym. Then I go home for dinner and after I sleep. Eat train sleep- repeat! There is not a lot of space for other things. All my free time I use for my family. Of course I have some representative things to do for sponsors and media too.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine that you may like to share?

Ms. Selina Gasparin:

I train most endurance in different intensity. When I go to the gym I warm up with the concept2 skierg which is an imitation for the upper body and is close to skiing. Then I do some exercise on senso pro which is for stability, coordination and straight. I also use TRX and do some exercise with weights.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Selina Gasparin:

With 20h physical training weekly it’s a challenge to get enough energy for the body. I eat everything and try to have a good balance between carbs, protein and vegetable. I try to eat as much as possible without going up in weight. The body learns to burn more if you give him enough.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Share with us your haircare and skincare routine.

Ms. Selina Gasparin:

I always have a gummy around my hair or braid.
I spend as less time as possible in the bathroom. So I have no special routine. But I like the L’occitane Product for shower and hair shampoo and also the creme and lotion. The are very natural and also the smell is good and natural and fits the whole family.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding biathletes who all are your fans, they shall like to know from you, what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in this field?

Ms. Selina Gasparin:

Trust your process. Enjoy the training moments, work hard and don’t be afraid of the pain (which can be a nice feeling) and focus on small steps. Every progress is like a small stone and they all together make the picture like a mosaic.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How did you feel before and after winning the silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi?

Ms. Selina Gasparin:

After 2 World Cup victories I had big hope and motivation for the Olympics but I also knew that I need so much to perform the best on a certain day. After I lost the chance for a medal in the sprint race because I didn’t hit the last shot by some millimeter I didn’t really believe to be able to show my best performance in the coming races. I had the biggest hope for the sprint race. But I just continued to do my best and it was the best day in my life when I won the silver medal. I can’t describe it in words when you work so hard for many years and then finally the biggest dream comes true. It’s just a fantastic moment which I will never forget.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Who has been your greatest influence and motivator in your success in the field of your career?

Ms. Selina Gasparin:

I had about 30 coaches (wich is a lot) and I learned from everybody and also from other people around me. It’s a long process and you need to collect all advice you get but the biggest help I got from my husband, who is a cross country skier. Together we worked hard and pushed each other to the maximum and we both won a medal in Sochi. That was magic.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

While playing professional sports, athletes often face injuries and other difficulties, would you like to tell the audience about how to cope up and make a comeback after an injury?

Ms. Selina Gasparin:

Fortunately I had no to bad injuries during my career. Some virus and broken legs which where cured in some months but the biggest challenge was my comeback after giving birth to my daughter Leila in 2015. I had to start by zero and build up my shape step by step.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

With a massive following who look upto you and follow you, how does it feel that you are able to influence and inspire the healthy lifestyle of so many individuals?

Ms. Selina Gasparin:

I haven’t got the feeling that I influence anybody but if I can motivate people to move and find joy in nature it makes me happy.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:
