Sarah Hendrickson: Ski Jumping World Champion & 22X World Cup Medalist Reveals Her Fitness Secrets

Sarah Catherine Hendrickson was born on 1st August 1994. She is an American ski jumper, 2013 World Champion and a member of the Visa Team. Hendrickson was born in Salt Lake City, UT. For as long as she can remember, Sarah’s childhood weekends were filled with 8 a.m.-4 p.m. ski days with her family. While skiing, every little jump in the run was an opportunity to get some air and take a risk. When her brother discovered ski jumping at age 8 and she was 5, it seemed like the perfect fit. Brother Nick, now a world-class Nordic Combined athlete, started jumping and after watching him for two years, she had had enough and decided to try it. That was just the start. She attended Park City High School until 2011 when she began competing in World Cup competitions for Ski Jumping, at which time she moved to The Winter Sports School in Park City, where she graduated in November 2012.

At just 19, Sarah already has broken records. She won a stunning 9 of 13 events on the inaugural World Cup ski jumping circuit in 2012 to become the World Cup Champion. She pushed her way back after summer knee surgery in 2012 to become the second American to ever win a World Championship (March 2013), just four years after teammate Lindsey Van won in 2009. Sarah also is the first American (male or female) to medal at a Junior World Championships — she has a Bronze and a Silver.

Sarah Hendrickson took 1st place on December 3, 2011 in Lillehammer and won her first World Cup ski jumping overall in season 2011/12. She has 13 World Cup wins in total. She also has two individual victories from the Continental Cup in Zakopane and Bischofsgrün.

It was announced on January 22, 2014 that Hendrickson was one of three women to make the U.S. Olympic ski jumping team competing at the 2014 Winter Olympics. Hendrickson was the first woman ever to jump in the women’s ski jumping event in the Olympic Games.

On August 21, 2013, Sarah Hendrickson suffered a knee ligament damage in Oberstdorf. Hendrickson is the last of five top female jumpers who, within a few months, had a bad fall and had to rest forcedly for a long recovery period.

Sarah Hendrickson is gold medalist ski jumping World Championship 2013, 22-time World Cup medalist and 13-time Continental Cup medalist. She is in conversation with Namita Nayyar President Women Fitness.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have started ski jumping at young age of seven years and you reached the pinnacle of success by winning Gold at FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2013 in Women’s ski jumping at Val di Fiemme, Italy. What factors you consider were responsible that made you achieve that?

Ms. Sarah Hendrickson:

I started ski jumping purely out of love. There was hardly anyone to ever look up to and the future with sponsors and financial matters were never a good scene, with this being said, I showed up to training everyday because of my love for ski jumping. I 100% believe that if you have passion for something, you will succeed much better than if you’re in something for the other reasons such as media, money or attention. I worked really hard for many years and focused on being happy with myself and my situation even when times were hard.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

On August 21, 2013 You suffered a knee ligament damage in Oberstdorf. You had on your right knee tearing of your ACL and damaged MCL. Post surgery you spent up to 6 hours a day in rehab, fighting your way back and was named to Team USA for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. You had the great honor in being the first woman to get to jump in an Olympic Games. How you were able to overcome such a physical injury/setback and what advice you can give to fellow sports person in a similar situation?

Ms. Sarah Hendrickson:

My knee injury was nothing shy of the worts event in my life. I had been jumping the best ever and I had my goal set on gold, I could hardly believe it had happened to me. Luckily I had an amazing medical team behind me and support system to fight back and make Sochi. Looking back now I am thankful I worked that hard because of my Sochi experience but it was the hardest six months of my life. I would say never give up. So many people rolled their eyes when they heard how bad my injury was and my goal of making Sochi, but I proved them wrong and that feels so good.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine you shall like to share?

Ms. Sarah Hendrickson:

For ski jumpers, it is really important to have strong, lean and quick leg power. Therefore we do a lot of squats and plyometrics. It is also really important to have a strong core in order to keep everything connected. I love to run and bike and although it’s not needed for ski jumping it keeps me fit and heart healthy.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Sarah Hendrickson:

Weight is a huge element in ski jumping as we are constantly being weighed for BMI in competitions. Luckily I have good genes and am naturally skinny, however I value what I put in my body. I don’t have a strict diet in the way that I count my calories but I like eating healthy as much as possible. My best advice is to always eat breakfast. I usually do my weight workout in the morning and if I show up on an empty stomach, it’s worthless.

Sarah Hendrickson on Women Fitness:
Keep supporting girls in sport as it is expanding everyday. I am in a male sport and we don’t want to take anything away from them just have chance ourselves. Thanks to anyone who has followed us through the journey!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have glowing skin and gorgeous hairs. Do you take some kind of skin treatment to keep it young and glowing and secondly what you do to your hairs to make them look so stunning?

Ms. Sarah Hendrickson:

I take vitamins from my company USANA. It provides all the essentials I need that I cannot always get through food, specifically when I am traveling. I guess besides that I don’t have any tricks, wash your face after working out and always before bed!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding professional ski jumping girls who all are your fans, they shall like to know from you, what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in field of ski jumping?

Ms. Sarah Hendrickson:

Learn the basics and build on that. Ski jumping is very technical but actually really simple. Everyday you can build on the last and you will move up and see progress. It can get frustrating but when you figure out how to really “fly” there is nothing else in the world that can compare.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How did you feel before and after winning a stunning 9 of 13 events on the inaugural World Cup ski jumping circuit in 2012 to become the World Cup Champion?

Ms. Sarah Hendrickson:

That season was amazing. I had no idea I would be that successful my first World Cup season and was shocked by my results day after day. I had so much fun in every competition and I think that showed in the results. It was a lot of hard work paying off.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Who has been your greatest influencer and motivator in your success in the field of your career in competitive ski jumping ?

Ms. Sarah Hendrickson:

I guess since ski jumping isn’t that popular in the US I didn’t have too many people to look up to however one girl stuck out from the start. That was Lindsey Van. I met her at the age of 7 and from that day she took on a sisterly role for me and I wanted to be like her and travel to Europe to compete. I then started traveling and competing with her and still she remains one of my biggest supporters. She fought for me to jump in Sochi against the IOC and I can’t thank her enough for helping me reach my dream.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

It is known that you love playing soccer, alpine andle ski. Tell us about this endeavor of yours?

Ms. Sarah Hendrickson:

I grew up in Park City so naturally the mountains were my backyard. Skiing, biking and running were the weekends for my family and I love them more and more everyday. As for soccer, I started when I was four and still love it today. I don’t have the knees for it at the moment but after ski jumping I hope to pick it back up in some form.
