World Leading Professional Surfer Paige Hareb on her Journey to Success!

Paige Frances Hareb is a professional surfer from Oakura Beach, New Zealand. In December 2008 she became the first New Zealand woman to qualify for the ASP Women’s World Tour.

She debuted on the ASP World Tour in December 2008 at the Billabong Pro in Hawaii where she won her second round heat, beating world no.2 Peru’s Sofia Mulanovich. In her rookie year of the 2009 World Tour she reached the semi-finals of the Roxy Pro in Coolangatta, Australia before being beaten by eventual winner, Gilmore. Hareb was 2009 Taranaki Sportsperson of the Year. Hareb placed 3rd in the April 2012 Dow Agro Sciences Pro Tournament, in New Plymouth.

She has been surfing against the World’s best since 2008. This year, 2014, will be her sixth consecutive year on the World Tour and she will be competing in at least 17 events around the World including Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, America and parts of Europe.

Paige Hareb is world leading professional surfer from New Zealand. She is in conversation with Namita Nayyar President Women Fitness

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You must have begun surfing at an early age and has reached one of the landmark in your surfing career this year by competing on the World Professional Surfing Tour in about 17 events around the World. Tell us about your journey in your professional surfing career and what factors you consider were responsible that made you achieve that?

Ms. Paige Hareb:

Yeah this year is my sixth consecutive year on the ASP Women’s World tour, it’s gone so quick! I started surfing when I was six and now I’m 24 years old. My Dad got me into surfing but I did and played a lot of other sport right up until the age of 16 when everything started clashing and I had to make decisions. I was in the NZ soccer academy, the Wanaka ski academy, rep basketball teams and loved tennis and of course surfing too.

I was more serious with all my other sports and surfing to me was the ‘fun’ one although I still did competitions and liked competing. Surfing sort of chose me, I won a lot of my age divisions going through the ranks and one step lead to another getting me to where I am today. I still would be on tour now if it wasn’t for my current sponsors, DHL, Subaru NZ, MtWoodgee surfboards, SevenT and of course my parents.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine you shall like to share?

Ms. Paige Hareb:

I get bored easy so I like to mix it up but for a good quick and easy workout that makes you feel like you’ve done something is skipping and boxing, even shadow boxing looking in the mirror focusing on your breathing gets the heart rate up pretty quick.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit ?

Ms. Paige Hareb:

A lot of the time I stick to the motto ‘all in moderation’ but if I want to get really lean and feeling my best before a competition I do at least one week of protein only diet.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have glowing skin and gorgeous hair. Do you take some kind of skin treatment to keep it young and glowing and secondly what you do to your hair to make them look so stunning?

Ms. Paige Hareb:

People get too obsessed over products to make themselves look ‘better’. I use any average priced shampoo and conditioner I can find, any of them do the trick! Skin-wise I use sunblock nearly everyday so have to get it out of my pores, I use a foaming face wash in the shower then wipe my face with a pad and toner afterwards then any moisturizer I can find.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How did you feel before and after when in December 2008 you became the first New Zealand woman to qualify for the ASP Women’s World Tour. What a proud moment for you and your country?

Ms. Paige Hareb:

Yeah it took me a while to get my head around it because I never really thought about it at all, I’m proud to be a kiwi and a role model for all women and girls.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Elaborate on your stance “Naturally goofy! (right foot forward)” and how does it gives you a competitive advantage?

Ms. Paige Hareb:

Most people surf “natural” with their left foot forward so when we surf a right-hander they are all on their forehand and I’m on my backhand, sometimes it has it’s advantages but it has disadvantages too so you have to try grab the advantages when you can.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have said about your surfing board that “Mt Woodgee’s shaped by Wayne McKewen is the best shaper”, tell us more about this and advantages you conceive on using this in your competitions?

Ms. Paige Hareb:

Yeah I’ve been with MtWoodgee for many years now and having Wayne as my shaper the whole time and working with him helps him design boards that will work for my surfing style. I trust him and I’ve had a lot of amazing surfboards from him so I hope we can both keep being loyal with one another.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have been born and professionally trained in surfing in New Zealand, What kind of facilities are available for surfing in your country?

Ms. Paige Hareb:

I train and use an Australian coach, surfing New Zealand needs to get a lot better and I’d love to help but I don’t have time right now, maybe I can give my the back to the sport when I retire because I can see so much more potential in New Zealand.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Apart from New Zealand, you travel to Australia, Fiji, America and parts of Europe for surfing. How you are able to adapt to these foreign locations and different kind of environment to compete professionally in surfing ?

Ms. Paige Hareb:

Every wave is different even if you surf the same beach break a million times so you get used to adapting, I love traveling, seeing new places and experiencing new cultures, it’s been my life for closer to a decade now so I’m not looking forward to stopping anytime soon.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:
