Risk of breast cancer reduced by Coffee

In 2010 in Canada, breast cancer killed about 100 women and one man each week.

In the study, researchers compared lifestyle factors, including coffee consumption, between agematched women with and without breast cancer, and found a lower incidence of cancer in coffee drinkers, though they note that other lifestyle factors affect breast cancer rates, including age at menopause, exercise, weight, education and family history.

After these other variables were factored in, it was apparent that the effects of coffee consumption were only measurable for ER-negative cancer.

 

 

“There is often conflicting information about the beneficial effects of coffee,” the researchers from the Karolinska Institutet said, noting a German study showed the same general trend, but the relationship was weaker.

They also say the mechanisms by which coffee protects against this cancer, and the compounds involved, are not yet clear.
