New line of testing introduced to identify HPV virus
Reported November 04, 2009
Dubai’s Histopathology & Specialty Laboratory (HSL) – part of Gulf Healthcare International’s Medsol network of laboratories – has introduced a new line of testing for Human papillomavirus ‘HPV’. HSL is the first regional private sector lab to introduce the new service in house.
HPVs are a group of more than 100 related viruses and some types of HPV – high-risk, oncogenic, or carcinogenic HPVs – are associated with certain types of cervical cancer in women. While most HPV infections occur without any symptoms, HPV infection sometimes persists for many years and can increase the risk of developing cervical cancer.
The new testing process is combined with HSL’s Liquid Base Cytology service (for cervical screening) and enables the clinician to request HPV typing as well from the same specimen, promoting easier diagnosis.
Dr. Samar Hourieh, MD, director of Histopathology and Specialty Laboratory said:
“The new HPV test is an important step for identifying and treating cervical cancer, as well as raising awareness and improving women’s health across the MENA region.”
Established in 2000, HSL offers comprehensive and high quality Histopathology and Cytology services in the private sector.
