– Reported, June 29, 2013
A total of 125,192 current smokers and 78,763 past smokers who underwent a major surgery were included in the study sample. Khaled M. Musallam, MD, PhD, and colleagues measured for 30-day postoperative death, venous events, arterial events, and respiratory events.
Researchers found increased odds of postoperative mortality in current smokers. These findings should be carried forward to evaluate the value and cost-effectiveness of intervention in this setting. Our study should increase awareness of the detrimental effects of smokingand the benefits of its cessationon morbidity and mortality in the surgical setting, study authors were quoted as saying.
