Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill May Cause Cancer

A US environment regulator warned that the Gulf of Mexico oil spill incident can cause cancer or other health related complications.
The people inhaling the crude oil particles like toluene, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and toluene might be at a risk of cancer as reported by the Natural Resources Defence Council (NRDC). The crude oil also contains lead and mercury particles which are both hazardous if taken internally. Inhaling this dangerous components can lead to skin and respiratory problems initially and might also have some adverse long-term effects.
It is reported that people residing near the coastal regions are suffering from nausea, headaches, throat irritation and coughing
Senior scientist of NRDC, Gina Solomon said, “There is significant health risks associated with this oil spill, and the risks aren’t just to wildlife, they are also to humans. These chemicals can cause acute health effects such as headache, nausea, vomiting, cough, dizziness. The chemicals can also cause longer-term effects, including the potential for miscarriage or low birth weight in pregnant women and risk of cancer over the longer term.”
