Mediterranean Foods Promote Longevity

Mediterranean Foods Promote Longevity

Reported June 24, 2009

(Ivanhoe Newswire) — The Mediterranean diet is well known for making people live longer, but new research reveals the individual components of the diet which promote longevity.

Professor Dimitrios Trichopoulos at the Harvard School of Public Health surveyed over 23,000 participants on lifestyle and diet. Participants were interviewed over a period of 8.5 years.

Researchers found key Mediterranean foods to promote health and a longer life are vegetables, fruits, nuts, pulses, and olive oil. Researchers recommend limiting the amount of meat you eat, and moderating alcohol intake. The study also shows that a diet high in fish, seafood, and cereals, and low in dairy does not necessarily indicate longevity.
