Majority of Korean Single Women Have Had a sexual experience: A study

– Reported, 15 August, 2012

Cable and satellite TV channel OnStyle surveyed 2,034 single women across Korea, finding that 67% have had a sexual experience.

512 single women between the ages of 20 – 34 participated in the online and session survey.

67%, or 334, of respondents answered “yes” to the first question, “have you had a sexual experience?” showing that modern women in their 20s and 30s are straightforward about their sex lives. However 92%, or 317 people, of those who had said “yes” when asked if they “have ever been worried that [they] might be pregnant after having sex”, recognizing as much as ever that pregnancy can be a large consequence of sex.

Also, 225, or 66%, of those who had had sex said they used condoms as their primary contraceptive method. 15%, or 51 people, relied on the withdrawal method. Single women are relying on men to be responsible about contraception.

30% of the women said “no” to the statement “if the man is not prepared, I will produce a condom.” Their reasons were, “I would feel ashamed to be carrying a condom around with me,” and “I could still feel society’s unapproving gaze.” Their sex lives may be open, the survey found, but their sexual awareness is low.

The reasons other women gave for not having had sex were, “society disapproves of single women having sex,” which was the choice of 44 people, or 26%, and “I want to be a virgin,” which 25 people, or 15%, said.

OnStyle team leader Kim Jae-hyeon said, “it is not enough that modern single have open sex lives, as they don’t think well about it and don’t have a good understanding of sex. On an upcoming episode of Studio Pink we will have a free and open conversation about women and sex, in a sympathetic way, how to have a proper sexual consciousness that doesn’t rely on men.”

Studio Pink is a new talk show where single women of the Republic of Korea come on and talk freely about their sex lives. The upcoming program, part of the OnStyle network that presents the style codes of single men and women, plans to be about “the safe and satisfying sex live code”. It broadcasts every Sunday at 11 pm, with rebroadcasts on Wednesdays at 12 pm.

The first broadcast on the 9th, about contraception, attracted great interest among single women in their 20s and 30s.
