Mediterranean Diet Best For Diabetics
Reported September 05, 2009
The latest research project to reach us at Ukmedix News concerns evidence that following a low carb Mediterranean style eating plan is a more effective way of controlling diabetics symptoms than the normally recommended low fat and low calorie diet.
The researchers said that the Mediterranean diet even led to a greater amount of weight being lost, a better control of blood sugar, a reduction in heart disease risks and less reliance on medication to lower blood sugar. The research which was led by Dottore Dario Giugliano from the Second University of Naples in Southern Italy involved over 200 Type 2 diabetic men and women who were asked to follow either the low carb Mediterranean diet or the low fat diet for a four year period. All of the participants were given regular counselling by professional nutritionists.
The results show that after the four years was up only 44 percent of those men and women who ate the Mediterranean diet still required medicine to lower blood sugar levels whereas 70 percent of those who had eaten the low fat diet still required it. The Mediterranean dieters also reported more weight loss and thinner waists as well as increases in good cholesterol and decreases in harmful triglycerides.
Dottore Giugliano said that the results of the study accentuated the importance of a healthy lifestyle and showed that it could play a big part in controlling health. It was also necessary he said not to overlook healthy eating despite the availability of many medicines to control blood sugar for diabetics.
At Ukmedix News we believe that given the choice between eating a low calorie, low fat diet or a low carbohydrate Mediterranean diet the majority of people would go for the latter because it is so much tastier and has so much more variety. With this new research showing that it is even more effective for diabetes control than following a low calorie, low fat diet it is likely that many more diabetic people will follow it. You should always check with a qualified nutritionist or doctor before changing your diet if you are a diabetic.
