Fish oil ‘boosts heart health’

Fish oil ‘boosts heart health’

Reported September 01, 2008

Taking a capsule of fish oil once a day improves the survival prospects of people with heart failure, a study has found.

Patients taking a supplement containing omega-3 fatty acids were nine per cent less likely to die than those given a placebo, Luigi Tavazzi of the ANMCO Research Centre in Italy said, according to a Reuters report.

Speaking at the European society of Cardiology’s annual meeting, Mr Tavazzi added that those taking fish oil tablets were also less likely to be admitted to hospital with cardiovascular problems.

Cardiologist Robert Bonow told the news provider that fish oil capsules are an “attractive option” as they are cheap, well-tolerated and do not interfere with other medications.

“I think it makes sense for doctors and their patients to consider using them,” he commented.

A report in the Independent last month stated research has shown that coffee does not increase the risk of heart attack, sudden death or abnormal heart rhythms.

The news provider added that one study showed drinking one to three cups of coffee a day reduced the risk of heart disease in women by 24 per cent.
