Diet Soda May Prevent Kidney Stones

Reported April 27, 2009

(Ivanhoe Newswire) — Diet sodas may reduce the risk of kidney stones in patients with stone disease, according to a new study.

Researchers said the citrate and malate content found in the most popular diet sodas may inhibit the development of calcium stones.

“This study by no means suggests that patients with recurrent kidney stones should trade in their water bottles for soda cans,” Anthony Y. Smith, M.D., a spokesman for the American Urological Association was quoted as saying. “However, this study suggests instead that patients with stone disease who do not drink soda may benefit from moderate consumption.”

The researchers found that Diet Sunkist Orange and Diet 7-Up contained the greatest amounts of beneficial alkali, which helps prevent the development of the stones.
