Diabetes Drugs Decrease Cancer Growth
– Reported, December 11, 2013
(Ivanhoe Newswire) A specific set of anti-diabetic drugs has been shown to reduce the risk of cancer in type-2 diabetic women by 32 percent.
According to researchers from Cleveland Clinic’s Endocrinology & Metabolism Institute, insulin sensitizers, a type of drug which decreases blood sugar by increasing muscle, fat, and liver response to insulin, can decrease cancer growth in women with type-2 diabetes. They were unable to find the same response in men. In contrast, researchers found another type of drug, insulin secretagogues, which increase production of beta-cells in the pancreas, may actually increase cancer growth.
