Contact Delivers Drug Directly to Eye

– Reported, December 11  2013

(Ivanhoe Newswire) – Researchers have developed a contact lens which continuously delivers medication directly to the eye for up to a month.

A team of researchers from Harvard University, Boston Children’s Hospital, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology developed the lens using materials FDA-approved for the eye. In primary studies, researchers found the contact can deliver results comparable to eye droplets used to treat glaucoma, the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the world. The lens delivers the drug via a drug-polymer in the periphery of the lens.

“A non-invasive method of sustained ocular drug delivery could help patients adhere to the therapy necessary to maintain vision in diseases like glaucoma, saving millions from preventable blindness,” lead study author Joseph Ciolino, MD, was quoted as saying.
