Heart Health
Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the U.S. more than all cancers combined.
Screening & Diagnosis
Ankle-brachial index (ABI) a painless exam that compares the blood pressure in your feet to the blood pressure in your arms to determine how well your blood is flowing, and can thus identify Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD).
Blood pressure testing high blood pressure can increase your chances of having a stroke or heart attack
Carotid angiography X-ray test used view large blood vessels that supply your brain with blood
Carotid duplex/Doppler an ultrasound test that shows how well blood flows through the carotid arteries, which are located in your neck and supply blood to the brain
Cardiac catheterization performed to further diagnose coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, or congestive heart failure, when other less invasive types of diagnostic tests indicate the presence of one of these conditions
Cholesterol and blood sugar screenings Blood samples are taken and studied at a lab to measure the amount of good cholesterol (HDL) and bad cholesterol (LDL); high cholesterol is often a precursor to heart attack
Echocardiogram (echo) Ultrasound waves show the structure and movement of your heart muscle
Electrocardiogram (EKG) test to record your hearts electrical signals
Electrophysiology study (EPS) test to evaluate abnormal heart rhythms
Event monitoring (Holter) test to record heart beats over a longer time period (usually 24 hours), which will show irregular, sporadic heart pulses
Stress testing A treadmill test to determine the amount of stress your heart can handle before it develops abnormal rhythms or decreased blood flow
Transesophageal echo (TEE) an echo obtained via endoscopy, providing a close look at the hearts valves and chambers, without interference from the ribs or lungs; often used when the results from standard echo tests are not sufficient, or when your doctor wants a closer look at your heart.
