High Blood Sugar Levels Increases Risk of Dementia
– Reported August 15, 2013
(Ivanhoe Newswire) Diabetes is a risk factor for dementia, but until now researchers did not know whether higher glucose levels increase the risk of dementia in people without diabetes.
Researchers at Harborview Medical Center, Seattle, used 35,264 clinical measurements of glucose levels and 10,208 measurements of glycated hemoglobin levels from 2,067 study participants without dementia to determine the relationship between glucose levels and the risk of dementia. During a 6.8 year follow-up, dementia developed in 524 people. Among the participants without dementia, higher average glucose levels within the preceding five years were related to an increased risk of dementia. Among the diabetic group, higher average glucose levels were also related to an increased risk of dementia.
Researchers say their results suggest that higher glucose levels may be a risk factor for dementia, even in people without diabetes.
