Exercise program for cancer recovery
Reported September 30, 2008
The Young Womens Christian Association (YWCA) Encore program is an innovative and inspiring approach to recovery from breast cancer surgery.
It is a gentle exercise program which meets the exercise and support needs of women after the trauma of their treatment in a nurturing and supportive environment.
The program will be run at Wingham Hospital hydrotherapy pool from October 15 until December 3, each Wednesday from noon till 2pm.
The YWCA Encore is offered free of charge and is a specifically designed program of gentle floor and pool-based exercises for women of any age who have had a mastectomy, lumpectomy or breast reconstruction surgery at any time in their lives. This eight-week program helps to improve mobility and flexibility, boost self esteem, relieve any discomfort experienced as a result of surgery, reduce the potential risk of lymphoedema and create a positive attitude to life and health. In the past 25 years about 6000 women around Australia have completed the Encore program.
