Lyric soprano Natalie Mann is a world renowned opera singer who works hard to stay svelte and ready for astonishing performance gowns. Natalie lives in San Diego but is a midwest girl at heart.Growing up on a farm, she was raised on the typical midwestern diet and had to fight like any coed to resist the freshman 15 pounds.Throughout her education and early performances she realized that while most everyone was interested in her voice, she felt more powerful and in control of her future when she was also hitting the gym, eating smart and drinking plenty of water.
As her career exploded and she began traveling the world to sing, she found her busy lifestyle to present many eating and exercising challenges. Any woman with an on-the-go lifestyle needs to decide for herself if she is going to go with the flow and eat the foods she happens to come across or if she will decide to intentionally choose the foods she knows will be best for her health. Similarly, when on the road, Natalie has difficulty finding convenient gyms and so she has developed routines in her life that integrate exercise into her daily activity. She works out in her hotel rooms, she takes the stairs instead of the elevator, and uses her luggage for squats. When at home she is active taking yoga classes, jogging, swimming and surfing.
Natalie Mann continues to be an audience favorite both in the opera hall and on the Natalie-Mann concert stage. A recent winner of the Audience Favorite Award in the David W. Scott Memorial Competition, she brings her lush and warm soprano to life in a variety of roles ranging from Mozart and Puccini to Verdi and Strauss.
Mann also enjoys concert work, and has been noted for her soprano solos in J.S. Bach’s Magnificat and Mendelssohn’s Elijah, under the baton of Sherrill Milnes. After making her debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 2006, singing excerpts from Lakme in the Family Concerts conducted by Duain Wolfe, she developed a relationship with the South Shore Orchestra and was a featured soloist on its New Year’s tour in China.
Mann was recently named a Resident Artist with Riverside Lyric Opera, where she will next sing the title role of Puccini’s Suor Angelica in 2015. She maintains a busy performance schedule with companies in Southern California, including the Los Angeles Opera Education Department. In 2011, she made her debut with San Diego Opera as a Noble Orphan in DER ROSENKAVALIER.
Critics praised her recent performances as Donna Anna (DON GIOVANNI), Micaela (Bizet’s CARMEN) and Marguerite (Gounod’s FAUST.) As Hanna in Lehar’s MERRY WIDOW, her performance was given top billing by a critic who wrote, “Mann’s voice and technique are superb top to bottom, and her acting smooth and unruffled, embodying the character right down to the aristocratic accent that was consistent in both sung and spoken lines.”(Singerpreneur.com)
Showing her artistic depths in art song, Mann made her debut at Carnegie Hall in 2011, in a concert featuring the work of female American composers. This led to a wonderful collaboration with composer Lori Laitman, and a release in 2013 of a CD on Albany Records titled EXPERIENCE, with world premiere recordings of songs of Laitman and American composer Richard Pearson Thomas. The reviews have been outstanding. Among them is one from the prestigious American Record Guide: “A superb exponent of contemporary American songs, soprano Natalie Mann has a voice that is simultaneously strong and tender, passionate and subtle. Her phrasing is sensitive to the texts and unfailingly musical.
She maintains a busy performance schedule with companies in Southern California, including the Los Angeles Opera Education Department. In 2013, she made her debut with San Diego Opera as a Noble Orphan in Der Rosenkavalier and was most recently seen with the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus in December 2014 as a soloist in the Beethoven 9th.
Mann also enjoys concert work, and has been noted for her soprano solos in J.S. Bach’s MAGNIFICAT and Mendelssohn’s ELIJAH, under the baton of Sherrill Milnes. After making her debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 2006, she was invited to appear as featured soloist with the South Shore Orchestra on their New Year’s tour in China. Other recent engagements include soloist in the Beethoven 9th Symphony with the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus in December 2014.
Upcoming engagements also include performances with the South Shore Orchestra and several recitals throughout the U.S. She was recently named a Resident Artist with Riverside Lyric Opera, LA, where she will appear in the title role of Puccini’s Suor Angelica in 2015. Other upcoming engagements include ‘An Evening At The Opera’ with the South Shore Orchestra and recitals in Chicago in August 2015.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You are a world renowned opera singer and perform across a spectrum of operatic arias, popular songs, musical theater and hymns. You are winner of the Audience Favorite Award in the David W. Scott Memorial Competition, wherein you bring the lush and warm soprano to life in a variety of roles ranging from Mozart and Puccini to Verdi and Strauss. What factors you consider are responsible for your spectacular success?
Ms. Natalie Mann: I think the primary factor has been my ability to focus on my health and training while staying playful and upbeat. I am pretty laid back, but when I am performing music, the mental focus sets free my huge personality to express itself. The ability to free myself in the music and not be inhibited in sharing that with an audience makes the difference. I feel I have something unique to share with audiences when I sing, and people connect with that.
Studying and performing music is a daily activity, and it takes a lot more time than people realize. I have to be aware of what I am doing both at work and play, because I take my instrument with me everywhere I go. I keep healthy routines so my voice and body stay in optimum shape.
Ms. Namita Nayyar: You made your debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 2006. In 2011, you made your debut with San Diego Opera as a Noble Orphan in DER ROSENKAVALIER. and this propelled your singing career to the height where you have been at the top of the world as a singer. Tell us something about this professional journey in the world of music?
Ms. Natalie Mann: Being an international opera singer is so different from a normal job path; which I did for part of my life. I was working at a Fortune 500 company and singing less and less. I saw all my friends becoming successful in business and my singing career hadn’t taken off yet because I was so young. That made me a bit jealous. It was hard to stay on the musical path when I felt so many odds were against me. But being laid off during the economic crisis of 2009 was a blessing for me, because I took a hard look at what I really wanted to do with the rest of my life, and the answer was music.
To be successful performing is a lifelong commitment to self-education. The rewards are abundant and include world travel and in order to be that desired by opera companies, I must remain focused on what is most important to me and make good decisions. While entertaining may be my profession, the career demands I treat it very seriously albeit peppered with a great deal of fun and fancy gowns. Because of the patience I practiced and determination I developed, I have been rewarded both in personal happiness and in professional opportunities.
Ms. Namita Nayyar: Critics have praised your recent performances as Donna Anna (DON GIOVANNI), Micaela (Bizet’s CARMEN), Marguerite (Gounod’s FAUST.), Hanna in Lehar’s MERRY WIDOW. Tell us about your experience in giving these memorable performances?
Ms. Natalie Mann: Being able to interpret so many roles is really a joy, but singing Micaela in Carmen stands out as a favorite. As in sports, musicians want to be ‘in the moment’ to give the best performance, and everything just clicked for me in that character. During her big aria, she’s alone in a smuggler’s lair, trying to find her love who has run off with another woman to tell him his mother is dying. Really powerful emotions are in play; love, duty, honor and fear. I could feel the music and my voice magnifying these emotions for the audience and letting them experience it with me. At the end of the aria, there was just a moment before the applause where all of us in the building felt the sincere emotion and took a breath together. It was magical to have a thousand people all in sync with me on the stage.
Ms. Namita Nayyar: You made your debut at Carnegie Hall in 2011, in a concert featuring the work of female American composers. This led to a wonderful collaboration with composer Lori Laitman, and a release in 2013 of a CD on Albany Records titled EXPERIENCE, with world premiere recordings of songs of Laitman and American composer Richard Pearson Thomas. Tell us more about this endeavor of yours?
Ms. Natalie Mann: In the world of classical music, female composers’ talents are often overlooked. I was singing a benefit for the “Go Red for Women” campaign for the American Heart Association at Carnegie Hall, and thought it only fitting that I should highlight works by women composers. The best part about working with living composers is that I could form a great relationship with Lori! She’s a wonderful individual as well as a great composer. I wanted to be the person to share and interpret her amazing songs on the CD ‘Experience’. On the other hand this project was really daunting, as a composer knows exactly what they wrote and how they want it to sound!
This CD does a great job of introducing people to really wonderful and accessible new music. There are free songs from the CD on my website www.nataliemann.com that are available for download.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine you may wish to share. It is said that you have developed routines in your life that integrate exercise into your daily activities. You work out in your hotel rooms, you take the stairs instead of the elevator, and use your luggage for squats. When at home you are active taking yoga classes, jogging, swimming and surfing. Tell us more about this concerted effort of yours to remain fit?
Ms. Natalie Mann: The old axiom “It ain’t over ‘til the fat lady sings” isn’t true of opera today. Today’s digital age requires singers like me to look the part as well as sing it. I used to struggle with getting an exercise program going, because I had it stuck in my brain that I had to do “one thing” to get in shape. I am much happier now that I have found ways to vary my exercise depending on the day.
If I know I have rehearsal later in the day, I try to do power yoga videos or walk, so that I can get in a workout but not be too tired to sing. When I am staying in hotels I will always find my way to the hotel gym and use treadmill while I study my music scores, or use online resources to find a cool new routine. A strong core is important to sing with power and luckily, crunches can be done anywhere. The most important thing I tell myself is that I need to do something, wherever I am! It’s easy to get off my routines when flying to different time zones and keeping odd hours, but those are the days it is most important to workout, as my body really needs that lift from exercise.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?
Ms. Natalie Mann: I have never been one of those lucky people who could eat anything I wanted. I have always needed to manage my weight, and have found better habits through trial and error. My weight would yoyo up and down because I would either be on or off a diet. Now I have found a long-term solution in the 5:2 Plan. In this eating plan, I enjoy normal calories for 5 days (1500-2000) and then do a modified fast (500 calories a day) for 2 days. I find this really beneficial for a number of reasons. I get to pick what I want to eat instead of eating something prescribed at a certain time.
Then I am really mindful on my fast days of calories I take into my body. It helps me make better eating choices on my non-fast days without thinking about it. And if I have a ‘splurge’ day, I don’t beat myself up for it. I also find this regimen makes me drink more water, which is great for my body and my singing voice! The biggest challenge when I am on the road is making sure I have access to fresh fruits and vegetables. I always recommend skipping restaurants and eating less processed foods from the grocery store whenever possible while traveling. I also try to find vegan restaurants (even though I’m not normally a vegan) because they give such great healthy choices when eating out.
Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have glowing smooth skin and gorgeous long brown hair. Do you take some kind of skin treatment to keep it young and glowing and secondly what you do to your hair to make them look so stunning?
Ms. Namita Nayyar: What you do and precautions you take to keep you throat in perfect condition for your singing performances?
Ms. Natalie Mann: When I stop to think about it, it’s amazing how much I expect out of my tiny little vocal chords! Staying hydrated means my water bottle is always with me and I have to refill it at least 3-4 times a day to get enough water. I plan out my performance days to include a physical warm up routine like yoga to help me get my energy and breathing going. Once I get to the performance hall, I have a specific preparation routine that includes vocal warm ups and music review. This “pre-game” preparation helps me focus and keep any negative worries at bay. As much as I love the celebrations after concerts, I must be careful to limit alcoholic drinks that dry out my vocal chords or speak above the noise in loud rooms that can strain my voice.
Ms. Namita Nayyar: Tell us more about your experience of performing as a soloist in the Beethoven 9th Symphony with the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus in December 2014?
Ms. Natalie Mann: The moment that I hear the final movement of Beethoven’s glorious music crashing around me with the orchestra and chorus at full volume, I know I have the coolest job in the world. People are familiar with Beethoven’s iconic symphony whether or not they love classical music because it is played everywhere. As a soloist, the work provides big challenges. The soprano part I sing is full of high-soaring acrobatics. The line is also very exposed – meaning if I make any mistake EVERYONE will hear it!
Perhaps the hardest part is waiting quietly for the preceding 40 minutes of the symphony before I have to fire up and sing. That’s like warming up to work out, then sitting down, then launching into a boot camp. It can be really tricky!
Ms. Namita Nayyar: What you wish to say about the website Womenfitness.net and message for its visitors?
Ms. Natalie Mann: I have found through both success and failure that my unique motivations for fitness and healthy eating will be different from others. That’s all OK. Just because something doesn’t work for me doesn’t mean I am a failure, it just means that I need to keep looking. The ability to log onto Womenfitness.net and find articles for motivation and tips and tricks for weight loss and exercise that apply to my unique needs is fantastic. I encourage people to embrace the thought that has really changed my life and fitness level – I may be busy today, but I know I have 30 minutes for exercise. That’s all it really takes to turn things around – 30 minutes of any type of exercise will yield amazing results. Good health is a journey, not a destination, and I keep that in mind and take it one day at a time.
