An accomplished performer in all formats, Margaret Cho could be called the “Queen of all Media” having conquered the worlds of film, television, books, music and theatre. She has five Grammy Award and one Emmy nomination under her belt, and continues her pursuit of all things creative. Never one to shy away from a difficult, or even ‘taboo’ topic, her socially aware brand of comedy has made her both a thought leader as well as a teacher to those with open minds and open hearts.

“More than 20 years into an enviable and eclectic career, Margaret Cho continues to be not just one of the funniest women in comedy but also one of the most exciting forces in entertainment. Reinventing herself, ‘American Myth’ shows a new side of Cho. More vulnerable. Deeper. Still funny and fearless!” – Perez Hilton

Equally as important as her art is the causes she is passionate about. Margaret is widely recognized for her charitable work with gay rights, anti-bullying campaigns and the homeless community, which grew out of a tribute to her dear friend, Robin Williams. In every segment of her life, Margaret is honest, forthright, passionate, uproarious and always entertaining. With her latest Concert Special, psyCHO, which was filmed at New York City’s Gramercy Theatre, Margaret Cho is at her very best.

Margaret Cho, an American stand up comedienne, actress, fashion designer, author, and singer-songwriter talks about body positivism in an exclusive interview with Namita Nayyar, President Women Fitness.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have become an inspiration for millions of women and young girls all around the world since you started performing professionally at the age of 16. Having performed over 300 concerts within two years, you were introduced to late night audiences, put on a prime time special and, seemingly overnight, you became a national celebrity. Walk us through your spectacular journey and tell us how it all began?

Ms. Margaret Cho:

I loved comedy and I wanted to do it, and I started at a very young age. I was doing sets in clubs all through my teens and I worked at it like I was an adult until I actually became an adult. Every day was devoted to being a better comedian and it’s still that way. Comedy is my passion and my religion and it was just a matter of taking things day by day to be better, stronger, funnier!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Introduce us to a typical day in your life.

Ms. Margaret Cho:

I get up early depending on what the work for that day is, whether it is getting on a plane to go on tour, working on a TV show or a movie, doing press – every day is different so there are not really typical days. When I am traveling I go explore the city. I love shopping all over the world and most of my wardrobe is built of special pieces I find all over. I do shows almost every night, even when I am home in Los Angeles. Doing comedy is usually the last thing I do in day and it’s the most important!

My activism is just part of me, and it’s important now more than ever to fight!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Share with us your Top 5 Favorite Foods or Recipes.

Ms. Margaret Cho:

It’s all Korean, which is more about marinating and fermenting less about cooking – and there are no recipes. It’s very intuitive and handed down from my family!  Very Top Secret!!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

In 1996, you developed an eating disorder as a response to criticism about your body. How were you able to fight and cope up to regain your confidence?

Ms. Margaret Cho:

I really just do not care about it anymore. I mean, I spent so much of my early adulthood focused on being thin, it was just a waste of time. I really just don’t care anymore and that is a miracle to be able to let go of ALL that emotional baggage !

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

In the present day scenario, with the rise of social media, how do you think has social media impacted an everyday woman, bringing in multi-fold opportunities to them? Also, what according to you is the one worst thing about it?

Ms. Margaret Cho:

Trolls! They are the worst!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

In 2009, you first spoke openly about things like body image, and women feeling good about themselves in the comedy/drama series Drop Dead Diva, which aired for six seasons on the Lifetime network. How was your experience doing the show?

Ms. Margaret Cho:

I loved it! I am very close with all of the cast and crew and it was an incredible experience. I am proud of the show and I love that I got to do it!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have been nominated for your fifth career Grammy nomination in the Best Comedy Album category for your latest studio album, American Myth. How overwhelming does that make you feel?

Ms. Margaret Cho:

I am so excited! It’s a huge honor and I loved making this album with Garrison Starr. I am so lucky that I got to work with her and make this record.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

American Myth showcases you first efforts as a composer. Salon magazine called the song “(I Want To) Kill My Rapist” from your album, “A new anthem” and UK’s The Guardian recommended it as “taboo-breaking humour”. Elaborate about your views that you wish to express through this album.

Ms. Margaret Cho:

I just think that cathartic rage has a healing force, and art is where I can express myself best.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have been incredibly active in anti-racism, anti-bullying, advocating for the homeless and gay rights campaigns, and have been recognized for your unwavering dedication. Tell us how have you been able to achieve and quench your thirst of giving back to the society through these endeavor of yours?

Ms. Margaret Cho:

My activism is just part of me, and it’s important now more than ever to fight!
