With Lizzie Kelly On Why She Loves Racing!

lizzie kelly

Lizzie Kelly is a British jockey who participates in National Hunt racing. Kelly rides horses for her horse trainer stepfather, Nick Williams, and also for trainer Neil King. In early November 2015 she came second on Aubusson in the Grand Prix d’Automne at Auteuil. If she had won she would have been the first female jockey to win a Grade 1 race in France.

On Boxing Day 2015 however she gained her most notable success to date when Tea For Two won the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase, making her the first female jockey to win a Grade One race in Britain, the horse being trained by Nick Williams and owned by her mother Jane Williams. In February 2016 she won Europe’s richest handicap hurdle, the Betfair Hurdle, on Agrapart at Newbury, and the following year she became only the second woman to ride in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, again on Tea For Two, but she was unseated from her horse at the second fence.

Lizzie Kelly is in conversation with Namita Nayyar, President Women Fitness.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You are a jockey participating in National Hunt racing and the first female jockey to ride in the Gold Cup after 33 years. Walk us through your spectacular journey and tell us how it all began?

Ms. Lizzie Kelly:

I was introduced to horse racing at a very young age as my mum and stepdad train racehorses. I was taken by the thrill of riding horses at speed but with a very tactical element straightaway and continued to work within racing during sixth form and university, riding as an amateur at the weekends. But once I left education I wanted to progress to the next step and took out a professional licence.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Introduce us to a day in your life.

Ms. Lizzie Kelly:

No day is the same really, I exercise horses at the yards they are trained at, in the morning, every morning but I go to four or five different yards during the week. Then hopefully that’ll be finished by 10.30 and I’ll get in the car and drive to the racecourse I’m riding at in the afternoon. If I’m not racing then I will generally help out with the horses in the afternoon as well.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine?

Ms. Lizzie Kelly:

During the busy time of the season you keep your fitness much easier and so it’s not necessary to spend hours and hours in the gym. I like swimming and go twice a week and I’ll probably fit a run in once a week. Other than that, riding four horses every morning and doing stable yard jobs keeps you very fit!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Lizzie Kelly:

My diet probably isn’t as strict as it should be! But I’m very careful yes, I normally have porridge or a boiled egg for breakfast, soup for lunch and a salad with perhaps a fish cake or Kiev for dinner. I eat quite a lot of hummus and natural yogurt as well. I do like to snack but if you chose the right things it’s not too bad!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Training for professional sports requires you to be out in the extreme weather. How are you able to take care of your skin and hair?

Ms. Lizzie Kelly:

My lips are attacked by the wind and I really struggle to stop them from chapping but I exfoliate them once a week and use Kaplan MD lip plumper which works a treat. I use Moroccan Oil in my hair which leaves it very soft. My skin is generally ok but I do use Kiko Skin Oil instead of creamy and greasy moisturizers.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Who has been your greatest influence and motivator in your success in the field of your career?

Ms. Lizzie Kelly:

A lot of people! I’ve got a lot of people who I can turn to including my mum and also my coach Rodi Green but all the jockeys have been hugely helpful to me since I started as a professional and I try to learn from everybody as we’ve all come from different walks of life and have different opinions and sometimes you can learn some thing really good from just chatting to people.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have broken a record by becoming the first female jockey to win a Grade One jump race in 2015 on Tea for Two. How did you feel after giving such a breakthrough performance?

Ms. Lizzie Kelly:

It was an incredible day and the confidence I gained in my own ability after that was very good for me. In racing a jockey is judged by what races they have won so becoming a Grade One winning jockey was a big step for me.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Tell us about the milestones that you had to cross and the struggles you had to overcome to make your place in this sport.

Ms. Lizzie Kelly:

Racing as a sport is a very challenging environment especially as there are a lot of ways to do one thing, for me being accepted within the weighing room was probably the biggest milestone and the thing I’m proud of the most however moving my way through my conditional claim has been really rewarding. Sometimes being a jockey feels like the hardest thing in the world, but I’ve got the job I’ve always dreamt of so the difficult times are worth it.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding jockeys who all are your fans, they shall like to know from you, what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in this field?

Ms. Lizzie Kelly:

Within any walk of life, if you want to be successful you must work harder than you’ve ever imagined. The only person stopping you from doing that is you. I continued working towards being a jockey when everything and everyone was telling me I wouldn’t get there, it took years to be good enough to contemplate turning professional and when I did I was still terrified people would laugh at me for thinking I was good enough but I did it and I’m so pleased I did. In short, work hard, don’t give up and take a leap of faith.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What do you wish to say about the website Womenfitness.net and message for its visitors?

Ms. Lizzie Kelly:

I think it’s fantastic, a place where you can look for inspiration and motivation. Sometimes it’s important to remember there are lots of people out there who are sacrificing the same things as you, sometimes this walk of life can be lonely, it’s good to know you are not alone.
