Lindsey Vonn, one of the United States’ most famous Olympians, won a bronze medal at the 2018 Winter Games, becoming the oldest female medalist in Alpine skiing at the Winter Games in what will likely be her final downhill run.
“I wish I could keep going; I wish this wasn’t my last Olympics but it is,” she said, adding: “I don’t think my body can take another four years of ski racing.”
Lindsey Vonn is an American World Cup alpine ski racer on the US Ski Team. She has won four World Cup overall championships—one of only two female skiers to do so, along with Annemarie Moser-Pröll—with three consecutive titles in 2008, 2009, and 2010, plus another in 2012. Vonn won the gold medal in downhill at the 2010 Winter Olympics, the first ever in the event for an American woman. She has also won a record eight World Cup season titles in the downhill discipline (2008–2013, 2015, 2016), five titles in super-G (2009–2012, 2015), and three consecutive titles in the combined (2010–2012). In 2016, she won her 20th World Cup crystal globe title – an all-time record among men or women, passing Ingemar Stenmark of Sweden, who won 19 globes from 1975 to 1984.
Targeting Olympic Gold at February’s Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, Lindsey Vonn shares her last minute preparations in a candid interview with Namita Nayyar, President Women Fitness.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
With your Olympic gold and bronze medals, two World Championship gold medals in 2009 (plus three silver medals in 2007 and 2011), and a career record of 20 World Cup titles, you are considered as the most successful American ski racer in history. Walk us through your spectacular journey and tell us how it all began?
Ms. Lindsey Vonn:
My journey as a skier began at a young age of 2 years. So you could say skiing comes as natural to me as walking! I started off on Buck Hill in Minnesota (a very tiny hill) and from there, worked my way up to the big mountains in Vail, Colorado. Honestly, I wasn’t a great skier starting out. My coach, Erich Sailer, nick-named me “turtle.” What made me stand out among the other skiers though was my determination—I was always the first one on the hill and the last one to leave. My dad saw that and gave me a shot. My whole family left Minnesota for Colorado and my career began.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
You won the gold medal in downhill at the 2010 Winter Olympics, the first ever in the event for an American woman. How do you feel about being the first of a kind to create a benchmark and to be able to inspire so many like you?
Ms. Lindsey Vonn:
I am really proud of my accomplishments especially because I’ve put everything I have into my career. I hope I inspire others to do the same and to never give up on their dreams!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:
Introduce us to a day in the life of an Alpine ski racer, preparing for the Olympic Games.
Ms. Lindsey Vonn:
A day in the life of me preparing for the Olympics is not as exciting as you might think. I have been so focused on the Olympics that I basically live at the gym. My average day consists of getting up early, going to the gym (about 4-6 hours a day), napping, eating, doing physical therapy and going to bed early.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine that you may like to share?
Ms. Lindsey Vonn:
My trainer, Alex Bunt, has everything planned out but I like to try and mix things up as much as I can. Monotony kills motivation. So the bulk of my training is weights, endurance training on a stationary bike, abilities, core and balance. I also enjoy road biking and tennis and anything outdoors except running.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?
Ms. Lindsey Vonn:
I usually stick to a balanced diet: protein, fruits, some low glycemic index grains and good fats (like nuts and avocados.) I indulge in ice cream or chocolate once in a while. I believe and live by the phrase “everything in moderation.”

Ms. Namita Nayyar:
Training for professional sports requires you to be out in the extreme weather. How are you able to take care of your skin and hair?
Ms. Lindsey Vonn:
When I ski, basically everything except my nose and cheeks are covered so I use SPF but that’s it. The real problem I find is dryness so I use lotion and oils to keep my skin and hair healthy.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
Who has been your greatest influence and motivator in your success in the field of your career?
Ms. Lindsey Vonn:
I would have to say Picaboo Street. I met her when I was 19 years old and she signed a poster for me. I was awestruck. I wanted to be an Olympian just like her. Also, The Goat (Roger Federer) has inspired me throughout the years and recently helped me continue to believe that we veterans have a lot of gas left in the tank!
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
You are one of the six women to have won World Cup races in all five disciplines of alpine skiing – downhill, super-G, giant slalom, slalom, and super combined – and have won 77 World Cup races throughout your career to date. Tell us about one of the most memorable experience that you may have had at these Championships and Games.
Ms. Lindsey Vonn:
I love every one of the wins that got me to where I am. My favorite was probably breaking the record in Cortina with my 63rd win was a dream come true. Although, the best victories are the ones you haven’t won yet!
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding ski racers who all are your fans, they shall like to know from you, what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in this field?
Ms. Lindsey Vonn:
I would want to tell them that if you’re lucky enough to have your passions and what you’re good at be the same thing then there’s nothing that can stop you. Work hard, do your best every single day and never ever give up on yourself.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:
With the Winter Olympics happening soon, would you like to share with us your preparations for the Olympics?
Ms. Lindsey Vonn:
I’m in the gym every day! I’m working on getting my knee and arm stronger than they were before the injuries.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
Also, you have been made the first honorary ambassador for the 2018 Winter Games. Tell us about your role as an ambassador for the upcoming Winter Games in Korea.
Ms. Lindsey Vonn:
I’m really honored to be the ambassador for Korea during the Winter Games! I had a lovely time the last time I was there and love sharing my experience to bring everyone closer together.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
What do you wish to say about the website Womenfitness.net and message for our visitors?
Ms. Lindsey Vonn:
I would love to say that being healthy, strong, and confident is a recipe for happiness. So go for the gold, ladies!
