Women Fitness President talks to the inspirational snowboarder about her road to success!
Namita Nayyar:
You are an Olympic silver medalist, 6-time world champion and 10-time X Games gold medalist.. What attracted you towards snowboarding as a sport, if you were to sum up in a few words?
Lindsey Jacobellis:
Well… My family and I were the weekend warriors at Stratton Mountain, VT every weekend for as long as I can remember. Then my brother took an interest in snowboarding. He picked it up right away and I naturally need to do everything that my older brother did so I took a lesson with my father. As I grew in the sport, it was such a different feeling compared to skiing and it made the mountain that I had been on for years seem like a new quest, the next adventure.

Namita Nayyar:
How do you kick start your day. Share with us your first meal of the day? Share 2 ways to detox?
Lindsey Jacobellis:
If it is a day that I will be in the gym then I have a big breakfast. I have 4 eggs with mushrooms and onions on a rice cracker and lots of hot sauce….and coffee is a must. On an aerobic day I can eat lighter in the am, so it might just have avocado toast or granola.
Detox 1. No dairy for 1-2 weeks 2. No alcohol for 2-4 weeks
Namita Nayyar:
Before kicking off snowboarding training, what are the key points a beginner needs to keep in mind?
Lindsey Jacobellis:
For snowboard training in the gym or on the hill, the most important thing to do is body prep. That means a dynamic warm up and good mobility; to make sure all joints and muscles are moving well, balanced and not being restricted. It is a great way to take note on how your body is reacting to certain workouts and to monitor injuries.
Namita Nayyar:
Three components that are a must in a fitness regime to prevent injury? 5 exercises to build full body strength that can be followed even while travelling?
Lindsey Jacobellis:
Three important components for me are diet, warm ups and recovery.
… On the road workouts can be challenging when gyms are hard to find but not impossible. 1. Walking lunges with dumbbells 2. Single leg RDL (Russian dead lifts) 3. Hanging leg raises 4.Traditional or wide leg back squats 5. Bent over single arm rows (These exercises can be done when there are limited weights to work with in a hotel gym.)
Namita Nayyar:
You made it to the final of the snowboard cross at the 2018 Winter Olympics and were leading most of the way, but ended up in 4th place by just 0.003 seconds. How did it feel to be so close to the win and yet lose it? What motivates you to start again from the scratch? Over the year what has your each victory taught you?
Lindsey Jacobellis:
It is always nice to win the holeshot but then you have to deal with the draft, and for those of you who don’t know, it basically helps drag racers closer to you because you are breaking all the wind. On the other hand if you were to hang back or not win the start section you run the risk of being caught up in traffic and run the risk of getting in a crash. So it can be a toss up on what is better in the moment. It is hard to be so close and just miss out on a medal, but that is how my sport goes sometimes and you have no control over the other riders or conditions, but that is what also makes it exciting.
I have been racing for over 20 years and those results are par for the course and it is not starting from scratch…it is just showing up at the next race and putting everything you have into it to win in that moment, that day.

Namita Nayyar:
As a sportswoman, what skincare and hair care routine do you follow to combat the stress of the sport?
Lindsey Jacobellis:
I have been fortunate to have Paul Mitchell as my longest running sponsor and they have educated me on my hair care routine and always have new products to help keep my hair hydrated and strong as I face all the elements throughout the year. My favorite Paul Mitchell product for my hair is the Forever Blonde line.
For my face… a lot of sunscreen.
Namita Nayyar:
Social media has before a huge platform to connect with like-minded people across the globe. As a coach how has it helped you in reaching your fans?
Lindsey Jacobellis:
Social media is a great tool to reach different demographics all over the world and has also been a great way to promote my event that I host, the SUPERGIRL SNOW PRO, the only ALL women’s snowboard event in the world.
Namita Nayyar:
Resolutions or goals for 2020? Motivational quote you live by?
Lindsey Jacobellis:
Resolution for my mind: Be present and in the now.
“Comfort is the enemy of progress” – P.T. Barnum
Namita Nayyar:
What are the three things about snowboarding that thrill you the most and the three things that skip your heartbeat?
Lindsey Jacobellis:
The three things about snowboarding that thrill me are the speed, I love going fast and feeling the elements on my body as I race down a mountain. The flow of a course or even if I am just free riding, how I can make my own flow and design my own path down a hill, and the strength I feel in my body when I put in a long day.
What makes my heart skip? Passing for a win, flying through the air off a big jump, and hearing the national anthem when I stand on top of the podium.
