Karin Oberhofer is an Italian biathlete. She competes in the Biathlon World Cup. Oberhofer has won a bronze medal at the Biathlon World Championships 2013 (4×6 km relay). She also competed at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Together with Dorothea Wierer, Dominik Windisch and Lukas Hofer she won a bronze medal in the Mixed relay at the 2014 Winter Olympics, in Sochi, Russia.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:
You are a world reknown biathlete having reached the pinnacle of success by competing at the 2010 Winter Olympics and winning a bronze medal in the Mixed relay at the 2014 Winter Olympics. Walk us through this spectacular journey and tell us how it all began?
Ms. Karin Oberhofer:
My father was in a wheelchair and took part in Paralympics and World Championships. My parents loved sport. I started to do cross-country skiing and then I decided to start with biathlon very late at the age of 17 when I was at school at the Sportoberschule.
I trained very hard always with joy, I never gave up even after difficult moments and my approach is always to improve every year. At the beginning I didn’t think that I would reach so much important results, participate in so many World Cups or win so many medals.
I am grateful to have had so many unforgettable moments in Biathlon.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
Introduce us to a day in your life, preparing for the Olympics.
Ms. Karin Oberhofer:
To prepare the Olympic Games I have to train very very hard for many years. Every day I have to work on myself, improve my preparation and technique (skiing and shooting technique).
A training day looks like this:
Healthy breakfast: wholemeal bread, muesli, fruit, nuts
Training: Running and shooting from about 8.00 to 12.00
Lunch: Carbohydrate, e.g. whole corn noodle or rice with vegetables
Lunch break: Relax, Short noon sleep
Training: 15.00-18.00 training, swimming, walking, cycling etc.
(After training fruit as a snack)
Dinner: proteins, e.g. Meat, fish, eggs, vegetables
In the evening, stretching exercises, video analysis of the training day, yoga, mental training.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:
What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine that you may like to share?
Ms. Karin Oberhofer:
In addition to my specific training exercises (skiing, roller skiing, running, shooting, hiking, swimming, “strength” training in the gym, etc.) I like to do stretching exercises and yoga. I feel well during these exercises and I can relax after the workout. I consider these exercises very important because with them I can listen to my own body.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?
Ms. Karin Oberhofer:
No I don’t. I don’t have a special diet but I eat mainly healthy, e.g. Whole grain, fruits and vegetables, self-packed bread or muesli, etc. I pay attention to the quality of what I eat but sometimes I like to eat something sweet or even not so healthy. My opinion is that is the best to eat a bit of everything but not too much of anything.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
Training for professional sports requires you to be out in the extreme weather. How are you able to take care of your skin and hair?
Ms. Karin Oberhofer:
Yes, well, we have to train in all weathers. I don’t mind if I have to train in the rain or under the snow but it’s important to have dry clothes for a quick change after the training or anyway the possibility to take a shower immediately specially in winter and autumn when it’s easy to catch cold.
Sincerely I like to train in the open air and I don’t use any strange products to take care of my skin and my hair besides normal body creams.

Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding biathletes who all are your fans, they shall like to know from you, what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in this field?
Ms. Karin Oberhofer:
I believe it is important to be diligent and willing to do it. I love to exercise, in the fresh air, in the nature. And the great thing about our sport is that it is very varied in the summer: cycling, hiking, running, strength training etc.
If you experience a lot, you learn a lot … you must constantly work on yourself and want to improve.
The combination of shooting and skiing is always intensive but it’s great and you never get boring. From biathlon you can receive great experiences for life.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
How did you feel before and after winning the bronze medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi?
Ms. Karin Oberhofer:
Sochi was an unforgettable Olympiad for me, I felt very good and comfortable there. Besides the bronze medal I finished in the top 15 in all the competitions I have done and after the 4th place my father made a wooden medal for me. I will never forget that.
Like all professional athletes I made a lot sacrifices, hard training all days, not too much time with friends or family… after Sochi I knew it is always worth fighting.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
Who has been your greatest influence and motivator in your success in the field of your career?
Ms. Karin Oberhofer:
My father Paul.
I didn’t want to speak with him about biathlon and my sport career when we were together. I would like that he was only… my father in that occasions.

While playing professional sports, athletes often face injuries and other difficulties, would you like to tell the audience about how to cope up and make a comeback after an injury?
Ms. Karin Oberhofer:
I think that every athlete during the career can face some kind of injuries. My suggestion is to believe always in him/her self, to recover and then to continue patiently.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
With a massive following who look up to you and follow you, how does it feel that you are able to influence and inspire the healthy lifestyle of so many individuals?
Ms. Karin Oberhofer:
I am always happy when I can motivate others or young athletes, when I can give some tips, when I can show how much my beautiful sport can teach for life. It may not be for everyone, but if you love the training and the competitions, it is a wonderful job.
