Host of World Spas on Travel XP Jamie Srubis is a stunning model, actor and influencer who loves to travel and stay fit. Let’s check out her exclusive interview below.
Namita Nayyar:
You have presented for TravelXp in Thailand, Fear Factor India and are now presenting a news show in South Africa. Walk us through your fantastic professional journey and tell us how it all began?
Jamie Srubis:
While I was a student, I started modelling and hostessing during my spare time. While with a modelling agency, I was offered the chance to audition for Fear Factor India. I had never really considered presenting – I was always more of a nerd in high school, participating in the math olympiad, rather than being the lead in the school play! Luckily, the casting director loved me and I was offered the role. I spent a month on set and realised I really enjoyed what I was doing. I met a lot of really interesting people and got to try things I never thought I would do (like being shot out of a canon into Cape Town harbour as one of the stunts!).
After the show finished filming, I continued with my studies, but always felt this desire to get back into presenting. Unfortunately, when you’re studying Chemical Engineering full time, it’s difficult to go to castings during the day or even work during the day. At that point I thought I would have to put my presenting dreams on hold while I finished my degree. But in 2011 I was offered a position hosting a fun, online news show called Zoopy! The best part (and worst part!) about the show was that it was an early morning news show, so I could film it before going to class. I continued that for a few months, while juggling studying.
Once I graduated from university, I took a year to travel and see the world. During this time, I saw an ad for a lead anchor for a travel show. After sending Travel XP a casting video, they invited me to host their new show, World Spas. I couldn’t believe my luck, being able to combine my favourite hobbies – presenting, travelling and visiting luxury spas! I was able to travel all over Asia, filming 13 episodes for the channel and visiting some of the most beautiful destinations all over the world.
However, as much as I enjoyed the fast paced lifestyle and travel, I did start to miss home, so after we finished the season, I decided to come back to South Africa and start presenting an entertainment show on a local news network. I’ve also started working full time as an Engineer again, so once again it’s about finding time and a balance between the two.
Namita Nayyar:
You are a model, hostess and entertainer. Introduce us to a day in your remarkable multi-dimensional lifestyle.
Jamie Srubis:
Well as I mentioned above, a lot of my life is about trying to find time to get everything done and still have time for family and friends. When I was shooting world spas, I would usually shoot for 3 weeks, come back home for 3 weeks and then be back on a plane and in spas for another 3 weeks! When we shoot the show, our schedule is very tight! We usually have about 3 days to shoot everything so we often have to work late nights to make sure we get everything we want.
On a typical day during World Spas, I’d wake up, put my wardrobe for the day together, get dressed and do my hair and make up. Then I head down to breakfast – which would usually be filmed! After breakfast, it’s usually a wardrobe change and then straight into my first spa treatment. The rest of the day is either spent in the spa filming more treatments or doing a cool activity (diving in Malaysia was one of my favourites), and then finally filming dinner at night. After 3 days, we’re back on a plane and off to the next destination.

Namita Nayyar:
What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine?
Jamie Srubis:
I try to do a mixture of both cardio and strength training during the week. I’m really lazy and can’t bring myself to go to the gym unless I’m going to a class so my fitness regime comprises of spinning classes in the morning and then some sort of strength training class in the afternoon. I also love Bikram yoga.
Namita Nayyar:
Share with us your diet plan that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit.
Jamie Srubis:
For me it’s about finding a balance. Most of the time I try to eat well. This includes a diet full of vegetables and good protein. I really enjoy cooking and like to plan my meals, so often I’ll do a big cook on a Sunday and prepare meals for the rest of the week. During the week I stick to a lot of salads and chicken breasts. I love food and do tend to overeat, so I’ve found it really helpful to weigh my portions because I often don’t realise how much I’m actually eating. I would rather have 6 small meals a day rather than 3 big ones. On the weekends I give myself a break and enjoy some cheat meals.
Namita Nayyar:
You have glowing skin and gorgeous hair. Give us Your Top 5 Hair and Skincare Tips.
Jamie Srubis:
- Embrace your natural hair! I hate heat styling my hair and really try to do it as little as possible. When I was younger I hated my wavey hair and would always straighten it. Now, I just wash it and let it dry naturally and I’ve found my hair to be much more healthy.
- Always remove your make up before bed. Even if you’d had a late night and want to go to sleep, Wash you face!
- Sunscreen. I always make sure to wear a moisturiser and base with an SPF. I love Photoderm MAX from Bioderma because it’s a tinted, oil free moisturiser with SPF 50.
- I love using Moroccan oil on my hair. I find it really controls frizz!
- A good haircut can do wonders for your hair. I hate cutting my hair but I make sure to get it trimmed every few months to get rid of the dead ends.
Namita Nayyar:
Being the host of World Spas on Travel XP, what advice and tips can you give to our readers who wish to rejuvenate themselves in a Spa? Also, tell us your 5 Favorite Spa Treatments/Therapies.
Jamie Srubis:
Well firstly, make sure to have a light meal before any treatments. It’s the worst feeling in the world having a massage after a big meal! Secondly, try to clear your mind before you enter the spa. You need to put all your stresses and worries aside and really try to focus on yourself. Find out if the spa you’re going to has amenities like a jacuzzi, sauna etc and if they do, try to go a bit early so you can enjoy these facilities before your treatment! If you don’t make it earlier, arrive at least 15 minutes before your treatment. Spas usually follow a strict schedule and you don’t want to miss out on your treatment or have your treatment shorten by arriving late. Lastly, make sure you drink a lot of water after your treatment. Massages help push toxins out of your body and water will help your kidneys processes the toxins and remove them from your body.
My favourite treatment:
- Deep tissue massage.
- Dead sea salt scrub (I have this in Jordon on the show!)
- Patra Podala Swedam – this is an Ayurvedic massage that uses herbal leaves that are chopped and fried in medicated oil. The mixture is tied in a bundle and rubbed against the skin
- Chocolate/banana facial
- Full Gelish pedicure with french paint
Namita Nayyar:
Having traveled the world and been able to see some breath-taking and exotic locations, share with us your Top 5 Destinations in the World.
Jamie Srubis:
- My top destination still has be to my hometown, Cape Town. From beautiful beaches, to mountains, to winelands, lively nightlife, Cape Town truly has everything.
- Borneo. I filmed two episodes in Borneo and absolutely fell in love! It has magnificent beaches and such interesting wildlife (like orangutans)
- Amsterdam. It’s definitely one of my favourite cities in Europe and I always have so much fun when I visit. Plus, the people are so friendly!
- The Seychelles. If you’re looking for a place to relax and unwind, Seychelles is the place to do it! The water is so calm and crystal clear and the diving is amazing.
- Sri Lanka. Parts of it are still so undiscovered and it’s a lot less touristy than similar destinations and if you’re looking for a holiday that has a bit of everything, then head to Sri Lanka. Quiet, beautiful beaches, breath-taking hikes and incredible scenery as well as a lot of culture.
Namita Nayyar:
Tell us about the Top 5 Places that are still on your bucket-list and why do you wish to visit them?
Jamie Srubis:
There are still so many places I want to visit. I filmed most of world spas in Asia, travelled a lot of Europe and live in Africa – but I’m yet to visit North and South America so those continents are next on my list.
Besides that, I’d love to:
- Go on a sea safari by dhow in Mozambique’s Quirimbas archipelago
- Go trekking around the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal
- Visit the beaches of Boracay, Philippines
- Experience the Rio Carnival in Brazil
- Take the Trans-Siberian Express through Russia
Namita Nayyar:
What according to you are the best ways to relax and de-stress after a long day at work?
Jamie Srubis:
I enjoy sitting back and watching a good sitcom. If I want to de-stress I usually watch something funny, that makes me laugh, like Modern Family.
Namita Nayyar:
Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding presenters who all are your fans, they shall like to know from you, what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in this field?
Jamie Srubis:
Learn to market yourself and network, and don’t give up! You also need to decide if this is something you really want, because the life of a travel presenter often looks a lot more glamorous than it actually is.
When you’re first starting out, take any presenting job you can get so you can start building up your show reel and slowly you’ll start getting better and better jobs.
Having a journalism degree is also very helpful, so look into studying if you want to make presenting a full time job.
Namita Nayyar:
What do you wish to say about the website Womenfitness.net and message for its visitors?
Jamie Srubis:
I think Womenfitness.net is a fantastic platform for women to share their experiences and help inspire others. The women featured on the website are from so many different fields and have so many talents and Womenfitness.net allows its readers to get up close and personal with these celebrities. Keep up the good work!
