India Shawn is born at Los Angeles, USA. She is a singer and songwriter; she has been lending her musical talents to the music industry for over ten years.
India Shawn champions self-love and divine femininity within her soulfully sultry, psychedelia-infused R&B. Spinning like a kaleidoscope between moods of empowered sensuality, thoughtful lyrical candor, and undeniable sonic energy, the Los Angeles songstress fulfills the potential of her own womanhood like never before on her 2020 third full-length album and first offering for Epic Records.
After a decade in the game, she quietly earned this level of awareness. Breaking into the business during 2010, she penned songs for everyone from Chris Brown and Diddy-Dirty Money to El Debarge, Keri Hilson, and Monica as part of the writing collective Full Circle. Following her 2012 debut Origin, she made waves and turned heads as an artist with “I’m Alive”—which Solange Knowles touted on the 2013 Saint Heron compilation. In addition to opening for Raury and Ryan Leslie, she lent her voice to Ludacris’s chart-topping Ludaversal and served up the Outer Limits EP during 2015. Along the way, she garnered praise from tastemakers, including HYPEBEAST, Billboard, Okayplayer, Rolling Out, Vibe, and more.
Rather than putting her Georgia State University Bachelor’s Degree to use and committing to a nine-to-five, India decided to travel a route that would provide the latitude and flexibility to record and perform. Driving for Postmates in 2018 to make ends meet in 2019, a chance delivery to a producer friend opened the door to record new originals and landed her management.
Women Fitness President Ms. Namita Nayyar catches up with India Shawn, an exceptionally talented singer and songwriter; here she talks about her workout, yoga, diet, and her journey in the music world.
Namita Nayyar:
A healthy morning ritual that you follow every single day?
India Shawn:
I typically pray, meditate, and have a glass of ginger tea or water in the morning.
Namita Nayyar:
You are one of the most sought-after lyricist and musician of this time; tell us about how this journey began?
India Shawn:
I don’t know how accurate that statement is LoL. What’s true is that I’ve been in the industry since 15. I started out demoing songs for my songwriter friends. I later went on to form my own songwriting team Full Circle comprised of my sister Jazmyn Michel and friends Joshua Heart and Kesia Hollins. I’ve written for and with some really amazing talent, and overall I’ve formed lasting relationships that have really bolstered my solo career in a beautiful way.

Namita Nayyar:
How are you staying creative during the lockdown time?
India Shawn:
I just picked up my guitar for the hundredth time. I’m dedicating myself to daily practice this time around. I’m putting together a home studio set up and finally learning to record myself — long overdue! I’m also coming up with really cool in-home performance ideas. I want it to be more than just sitting on my couch with a mike in hand.
Namita Nayyar:
Which exercises are an integral part of your workout routine? Five must-do mornings stretches?
India Shawn:
Yoga is an integral part of my workout routine. I’ve been taking advantage of all the free IG live yoga classes. Five must-do morning stretches: toe touch, downward dog, back bend, cat-cow, pyramid pose.
Namita Nayyar:
Introduce us to a day in your busy life? What’s like a day off routine?
India Shawn:
A busy day is waking up and doing my morning meditation, scrolling social media, having a quick breakfast, responding to emails and texts.
I may have an interview or Q&A to respond to, I may be shooting a Wellness Wednesday video for my YouTube channel, or I may have a performance to set up and do. It’s hard to get a workout in on busier days, but stretching is second nature now; I’ll do that anytime, anywhere.
On my days off I’m able to get an hour of yoga in. I juice veggies for the week. I meditate 2 or 3 times throughout the day and do some journaling. I’m also dedicating at least an hour to guitar practice — and of course binging the latest trending show on Netflix.
Namita Nayyar:
Your meal before and after a workout? The secret to a slim torso.
India Shawn:
I’ll have scrambled eggs and avocado or sometimes just a juice before working out. I generally have a pretty balanced diet. I swear by celery juice for digestion, but otherwise I think I just have this switch that knows how to regulate my eating habits.
I might crave In-N-Out one day, but I’ll eat super healthy the days that follow. It’s all about balance for me and also knowing how I desire to look and the reality of what it takes to maintain my physique.
Namita Nayyar:
Favorite Meal of the day according to you would be? What does it contain?
India Shawn:
That’s kind of like asking my favorite song. I love all food; I’m really not hard to please. Salmon or sea bass and a side of mashed potatoes and veggies (squash, zucchini, and spinach) do it for me.
Namita Nayyar:
Top three healthy snack options? One diet secret you would like to share?
India Shawn:
My top 3 healthy snack options are sea salt roasted almonds, a fruit salad, or carrots/ celery and hummus. I don’t know that I’ve ever done a diet, but I swear by the magic of celery juice.
Namita Nayyar:
Define Women Fitness for WF viewers.
India Shawn:
Women Fitness promotes healthy living while highlighting a diverse range of amazing, strong women. It’s a space to discover new ways to grow into better versions of ourselves.
Namita Nayyar:
Share your workout during a lockdown?
India Shawn:
I do an hour of yoga led by CorePower instructors. The classes I take are vinyasa based but include a lot of balance practice, inversion play, and lots of focus on spinal movement. I recently ordered some gear to try out Pilates — that’s my next challenge.
Namita Nayyar:
You are an advocate for self-love. One piece of advice for the young girls who face issues realizing it?
India Shawn:
I’ve come to realize that my insecurities were rooted in false beliefs that I’d formed as a young girl. Beliefs are just things we repeatedly tell ourselves. I told myself that I wasn’t good enough, I wasn’t worthy of love, and that I would need to work extra hard to prove myself.
I think it’s important that we all understand the power of our words. My advice is simply to affirm you. Tell yourself you are beautiful, you are worthy; you are ENOUGH, until you believe it.
Namita Nayyar:
Social media is instrumental in today’s era. One thing you love and hate about it?
India Shawn:
I love that there are so many worlds to explore on social media. You can go down a fitness rabbit hole, or cooking, or beauty etc. There’s so much to discover. I hate that we often find ourselves comparing our lives to what we see on social media, when in fact there’s so little context for what a person’s life actually looks like.
Namita Nayyar:
Athleisure brands that you love?
India Shawn:
Nike has never failed me. The brand is so quality, I still wear leggings I bought over 5 years ago.
Namita Nayyar:
If you were to change one thing about you it would be?
India Shawn:
This is so dumb, but I sometimes wish I had a longer neck LOL. Otherwise I’m happy with myself. I’m happy with whom I am, and that’s all that matters.
Namita Nayyar:
Resolutions for 2021?
India Shawn:
My resolution is to be a better listener, not only to whoever is sitting in front of me, but I also want to listen to myself in order to be guided to my highest potential. We always have the answers we need inside.
