Namita Nayyar, President Women Fitness talks to Erin Robinson about her struggle, new YouTube Series and motivational tips.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
When you were forced into the ER for a debilitating feminine health issue during The Amazing Race, you feared coming out about the issue would jeopardize your identity as a beauty personality. Then what was the driving force that made you change your decision?
Ms. Erin Robinson:
I thought I had injured myself while training for The Amazing Race. I experienced extreme back & hip pain for months leading up to the show, during filming, and afterwards. The pain became so great that I started a physical therapy back regimen until one night the pain started spreading to my abdomen. That’s when I went to the ER. I was diagnosed that night with fibroid tumors (benign tumors in the uterus), and it was then that I realized that I had not been to the OBGYN in almost 4 years! That was one of the biggest wakeup calls of my life.
When I found out that between 70-80% of women will have fibroids yet I had never heard of them, I felt compelled to use my platform at Clevver to share my experience and educate the millions of women we reach. A huge part of our brand is to embrace the “mess” behind the beauty by embracing yourself. This journey was a perfect opportunity to show young women that you can take on real problems with strength and openness. You don’t have to fight in silence, and you can be confident in yourself. Just because you have a health condition does not mean you are flawed.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:
Introduce us to your latest docu-series “It Got Real” where your surgery breaks the glass that many social media personalities keep around their highly curated lives.
Ms. Erin Robinson:
It Got Real is a five episode docu-series that goes inside my journey towards treating my fibroid tumors. I brought an all-female crew with me inside my doctors’ appointments and even inside my surgery to try and show women what this journey looks like. At Clevver we want to be the place where people come to escape their troubles. We want to make them laugh and encourage them. However, our talent also goes through real things too, and I felt like this was a great opportunity to open up to them in a way that I’ve never done before. When I honestly show some of the real
troubles I go through, I believe it encourages people who watch me to know they are not alone in their struggles.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine do you follow with this health issue?
Ms. Erin Robinson:
Because of the size (and number) of my tumors, my doctor recommended that I not run or engage in any high intensity activities. Spin class was my saving grace!
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
What kind of diet do you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?
Ms. Erin Robinson:
I try and steer away from “dieting” generally, and I focus more on portion control when it comes to what I eat. I truly believe you can eat almost anything you want in moderation. If I want potato chips I will place only one serving size in bowl instead of eating them from the bag. That way I can mentally keep myself in check.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:
How has your experience been so far since you’ve come out about this health issue?
Ms. Erin Robinson:
Until I had the Acessa procedure to treat my fibroids, I had forgotten how good it felt to be myself in a healthy body. Ten days after surgery was the first time in 5 years that I hadn’t lived in constant pain & discomfort. I am back to working out and I finally have energy to accomplish goals that have been on my to-do list for years!
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
What were your initial feelings when you got to know about the health issue that you were facing?
Ms. Erin Robinson:
I was terrified. I had never heard of these benign tumors before (no one in my family had them and a lot of women don’t talk about them often) and the surgical options that are typically recommended for women involved major surgery with major risks. I was so lucky to have found a minimally invasive procedure, Acessa, that not only treated my fibroids, but also allowed me to get back to my life in just a matter of days.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
Who has been your greatest source of motivation and inspiration behind coming out about your health issue?
Ms. Erin Robinson:
Our audience is the reason why I did this. Our 11 million subscribers consist of mostly women and girls who all look up to us at Clevver. I am like one of their older sisters! When I found out that this illness was going to affect at least 70% of them, I felt a tremendous obligation to use our massive platform to get this on their radar early. The sooner that our audience has this knowledge, the sooner they can start asking their doctors if it’s something that they might deal with in the future.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:
With an audience of over 228k followers on your Instagram account @heyerinrobinson you’re a social media sensation and an internet leading star. How does it feel that you are able to influence the healthy lifestyle of so many individuals?
Ms. Erin Robinson:
The reason why I wanted a successful entertainment career originally was because I wanted to impact people in a positive way, so while this was a difficult personal journey for me it was actually a blessing because I could use it to help so many other women. Another huge message is to encourage women to stay up to date on their women’s health checkups! I had not been to the OBGYN in four years, and had I gone I would have been able to treat my condition much more easily! Ironically, I was an Exercise and Physiology major at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and I studied pre-med and trained to be an EMT there. If anyone should have known better, it was me!
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
Provide us with your 5 Personal Tips to handle any feminine health issue.
Ms. Erin Robinson:
First of all, schedule an annual appointment with your OBGYN. Even if your doctor doesn’t recommend that you get an annual pap smear (I know that’s a newly debated topic in healthcare); stop by anyway for a physical exam.
Secondly, talk to your inner circle of friends and family if something seems off. I think sometimes as women we hold back discussing our feminine issues with each other, but I think we’re each other’s best resources and in confidence we should be asking each other for input.
Thirdly, don’t let “getting old” justify your pain. I used to tell myself “this must be what getting old feels like” and that thought was one of many that kept me living in pain for far too long. Fourth, do your research and ALWAYS get a third or fourth opinion. If I had stopped at my second opinion, I would have been in an entirely different place and I wouldn’t have found this incredible state-of-the-art procedure.
