Emma Gilmour: Ranked 2010 World’s Best Female Rally Driver Reveals Her Fitness Secrets

Emma Gilmour has become Red Bull Global Rally cross’ first female driver, competing alongside fellow New Zealander Rhys Millen in a Hyundai Veloster Turbo. Emma Gilmour home town is Dunedin New Zealand. She is Global Rally Cross driver #27. Her Vehicle is Hyundai turbo Veloster with her Team Rhys Millen Racing. Her Driving Style is aggressive, smooth and committed. Her education is from St Hildas Collegiate, Dunedin and did her Bachelor of Arts from Otago University.
Frequently one of the top drivers in the New Zealand Rally Championship, Gilmour scored three consecutive runner-up championship finishes from 2010-2012. She made it to the sport’s top level when she competed in New Zealand’s round of the 2012 World Rally Championship, where she earned an impressive 14th place finish against a world-class field.

In 2010, Gilmour earned the ranking of world’s best female rally driver. Rally and rally cross have significant differences, but Gilmour’s strong stage rally background means she will be equipped with all the skills to adapt and succeed. She’ll have the car to do it, too. In 2012, Millen’s Hyundais earned second place in GRC’s Manufacturer’s Championship, while a limited 2013 program saw top five finishes at both X Games Los Angeles and Charlotte. There’s not much more that a new driver can ask for than a fast and reliable car, and the Veloster Turbos fit that criteria nicely.

Her Rally Debut was 2002 Targa Bambina in Mitsubishi Evo 3 where she stood 1st in Class, 6th Overall out of 96 entries. Her favorite rally is Rally Finland. She once said “I was lucky enough to compete here in 2006 and I loved the roads and the fans. Claire Mole and I won stages in the Ford Fiesta in our very first event together. It was a very special event and I really hope to compete there again in the future”.

Emma Gilmour is ranked in 2010 as the World’s Best Female Rally Driver. She is in conversation with Namita Nayyar President Women Fitness.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Your love with racing cars must have begun at an early age. You took to professional car rally racing in 2002 and has participated in about 100 rallies all around the world. Later your professional career propelled to the height where you are at the top of the world of professional car rally racing by being the fastest female rally driver in the world. Tell us something about this journey of success?

Ms. Emma Gilmour:

I started in Motorsport relatively late compared to many of my competitors and I feel very lucky to have had the opportunities that I have had. I have got to see so much of the world through my success in rallying along with meet and work with lots of wonderful people.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have selected a sport which requires a lot of cohesiveness and absolute understanding between your co driver, your team of technicians, your machine and you to finally succeed, how do you achieve that?

Ms. Emma Gilmour:

It is always important to remember that it is almost impossible to succeed on your own. To be successful at anything in life – work or sport – you need a really good support team around you. I value every single member of my team and know that without their passion and dedication I couldn’t succeed. Especially with motor sport as I need highly skilled mechanics and engineers to ensure I have the most competitive car possible.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How did you feel before and after fininshing remarkable 2nd Overall at NZRC Round 4, Rally NZ on your home turf? (This is a little out of date – I finished 2nd Overall in the NZ Rally Championship in 2010, 2011, 2012)

Ms. Emma Gilmour:

It’s a mixed feeling finishing runner up in the NZ Rally Championship for 3 years in a row as I feel proud to have finished so well but also frustrated that through some small problems we had we haven’t secured the NZ title yet. It was also a buzz finishing 2nd in Class at the NZ round of the World Championship in 2012.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine you may wish to share?

Ms. Emma Gilmour:

I try to keep generally fit and strong through going to the gym and running. I need to be quite strong for driving the rally car at speed. Surprisingly my legs get a good work out with the brake pedal as there is no ‘booster’ (assistance) with it. It is also important to have a strong core to keep myself from getting sore in the car.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Emma Gilmour:

I try to eat as cleanly as possible. I try to limit sugar intake and processed foods to keep my energy and mood levels up.

Emma Gilmour on WomenFitness: It’s a wonderful online resource for everything relating to fitness and health.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have glowing skin and gorgeous hair. Do you take some kind of skin treatment to keep it young and glowing and secondly what you do to your hair to make them look so stunning?

Ms. Emma Gilmour:

I always wear sunscreen every day on my face.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding professional car rally racing girls who all are your fans and shall like to know from you for their climb to ladder of success in field of car rally racing?

Ms. Emma Gilmour:

My favorite quote is “Dream as if you will live forever and live as if you will die today.’ I think it is so true for us to remember as you can achieve so much if you put your mind to it. But most importantly I think it is important to enjoy the journey as much as the destination as there will be a lot of ups and downs as you chase your dream and it is important to appreciate all of these experiences as they all help you grow.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How did you feel before and after being named the fastest female rally driver in the world?

Ms. Emma Gilmour:

It is nice to have this recognition and to maybe inspire the next generation of young female rally car drivers, but I am only ever wanting to be the best that I can be. And I know that the best is yet to come. Smile.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How did it feel on your rally debut in 2002 at Targa Bambina with your Mitsubishi Evo 3 where you were 1st in your Class?

Ms. Emma Gilmour:

Surprised. I entered simply to have a go as I love driving so much. To keep improving all day as an absolute beginner and then find out at the end of the day I had won my class and finished 6th out of 100 cars was surprising! At the time I think I had no concept of how impressive that was as I only focused on the enjoyment of it.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Tell your experience on making history at Red Bull Global Rally cross, as from New Zealand’s you became the series’ first-ever female driver as part of the Rhys Millen Racing/Hyundai stable?

Ms. Emma Gilmour:

It was a huge honor to be the first woman competing in the Red Bull Global Rally Cross series and to be the first woman to make the super car final in Las Vegas was one of the highlights of my career. It is such a brutal form of racing and to show my potential was great. I know that given the chance again I could really shine in this form of racing.
