Is fitness fun for you? Do you find yourself motivated? Do you dread the treadmill? Yes, then maybe your fitness needs to be redefined. Fitness should be fun, so that it lasts. Although diet, nutrition, hydration and a workout plan are crucial, the most important ingredient to fitness is fun. This week's focus is on  Zumba Fitness: Making Exercise Fun.

Hot Fitness Tip

Squatting, is an extremely oxygen-consuming workout. Your need oxygen to get energy to the muscles. If you don't take in enough oxygen, you can't utilize enough energy, and you end up running on stored ATP and Creatine. These sources run low in a hurry when you're doing some serious lifting. The more oxygen your body can take in, the more energy gets utilized, and the more reps you can squeeze out.

The only way to do this is to spend some time pounding the concrete, biking, or anything else that gets your heart rate up and going. Make sure to get at least 3 rounds of cardio for 20 minutes or more per week, and keep that pulse higher.

Words of Inspiration

Try till you Die

In June 1985, two British mountaineers Joe Simpson and Simon Yates made the first-ever climb of the West Face of the 21,000 foot snow-covered Siula Grande mountain in Peru.

In a book on the climb entitled "Touching The Void", Joe Simpson wrote:

"As I gazed at the distant moraines, I knew that I must at least try. I would probably die out there amid those boulders. The thought didn't alarm me. It seemed reasonable, matter-of-fact. That was how it was. I could aim for something. If I died, well, that wasn't so surprising, but I wouldn't have just waited for it to happen. The horror of dying no longer affected me as it had in the crevasse. I now had the chance to confront it and struggle against it. It wasn't a bleak dark terror any more, just fact, like my broken leg and frostbitten fingers, and I couldn't be afraid of things like that. My leg would hurt when I fell and when I couldn't get up I would die."

The survival of Yates himself was extraordinary. Simpson somehow found a way of climbing out of the crevasse after 12 hours and then literally crawled and dragged himself six miles back to camp, going three days and nights without food or drink, losing three stone, and contracting ketoacidosis in the process, would be the stuff of heroic fiction if it was not so true. Indeed, six operations and two years later, he was even back climbing. All because, against all the odds, he tried ...

  • 1/2 tsp. ground turmeric

  • 1/2 tsp. ground cardamom (or substitute 1 1/2 Tbsp. curry powder for spices from chili powder through cardamom)

  • 1 lb. (2 cups diced) small butternut squash, peeled, seeded, cut into 1/2" cubes

  • 1/4 cup raisins

  • 2 carrots, cut into 1/4 inch slices

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 large zucchini, halved lengthwise, cut into 1/4" slices

  • 1 (15-oz) can garbanzos, drained

  • 1/4 cup pitted black olives, halved

  • 3/4 tsp. salt

  • 1/2 tsp. white or black pepper

  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley, divided

  • 1-2 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice

  • 3 cups cooked brown rice (whole-wheat couscous may be substituted)

Directions:

  • Heat oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add onion. Cook until translucent, about 2 minutes. Add broth. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring frequently, about 20 minutes.

  • While broth is simmering, combine spices in a mixing bowl then stir them into pot. Add butternut squash, raisins, carrots and garlic. Cover and continue simmering until vegetables are tender, about 25 to 30 minutes.
Add in zucchini, garbanzos, olives, salt and pepper. Re-cover and continue to simmer until zucchini is tender, an additional 10 to 12 minutes. Stir in 2 tablespoons parsley and lemon juice.

  • Place warm rice uniformly on large serving platter (or individual plates). Spoon the stew over bed of rice. Garnish with remaining parsley and serve.
