A new research finds many cancer survivors are obese and not physically active, which could make it harder to keep their cancer under control. Fewer than 22% of the cancer survivors were physically active, over 18% were obese (body mass index [BMI] = 30 kg/m2), and another 34% were overweight (BMI 2530 kg/m2). This week's article focuses on Nutrition and Exercise Guidelines for Cancer Survivors.

Remember, you are what you eat!

Use positive or affirming language when stating your fitness or nutrition goals. For example, instead of making a list of foods you shouldn't eat if you want to improve your diet; instead, make a list of fruits, vegetables, grains and other healthful foods that will enhance your nutrition.

Along the Way

You can get things done without enjoying yourself. You can also enjoy yourself without getting anything done. However, the best approach is to get things done while also enjoying yourself. That's the way to reach long term success, building one accomplishment on top of another.

If you aim to simply enjoy yourself without getting anything done, then the result is -- you don't get anything done. You may be very positive and cheerful, at least for the moment, but after a while it will seem quite empty. On the other hand, if you're driven to achieve, without any consideration for the quality of your life along the way, that can be empty, too. Sure, you'll get what you want. But you're also likely to get burned out and resentful.

Make the effort, move toward your goals, and delight in the moments along the way. When you enjoy the journey there's never any reason to stop.

Nutrition and Exercise Guidelines for Cancer Survivors

New research finds many cancer survivors are obese and not physically active, which could make it harder to keep their cancer under control.

Researchers in Canada analyzed data from more than 114,000 adults. They found fewer than 22 percent of Canadian cancer survivors were physically active -- the lowest rates were in men and women who had survived colorectal cancer and women who survived melanoma and breast cancer. Results also show nearly one in five cancer survivors was obese, and one in three was overweight.
