Overweight and/or obese
(compared to normal weight) females have a greater
incidence of reproductive-related disorders, cancer
of the breast, cervix, ovary and uterus, adverse
pregnancy outcome and pregnancy-related disorders,
reproductive endocrinologic problems, infertility
and urogynecologic disorders, to name a few. Keeping
in line with the fact, this week we focus on
Obesity and Fertility.
Enjoy good health,

Dont try to lose weight during the holidays --
this may be a self-defeating goal. Instead, strive to maintain your weight by
balancing party eating with other meals. Eating lighter foods doesn't mean
taking the joy out of celebrating. It only means skimming off the fat, cutting
back a little and learning to modify traditional recipes. Try boiled shrimp or
scallops with cocktail sauce or lemon. Go easy on fried appetizers and cheese
cubes. To help ensure there will be healthful treats, bring a dish to the party
filled with raw vegetables with a yogurt or cottage cheese dip, or bring a
platter of fresh fruit.

Commit Yourself
On July 4, 1952,
Florence Chadwick steeped into the water off
Catalina Island and headed for the California coast
twenty-one miles away. Fatigue set in as the hours
ticked off, but her big problem was the
bone-chilling cold of water. A short time later she
learned that she had been pulled out only a half
miler from the coast. She reflected that she
could have whipped the cold and fatigue if she could
have seen the land, if only the fog had not obscured
her goal. It blinded her reasoning, her eye,
and her heart. That was the only time Florence ever
quit.
Two months later she swam the same channel. Again
fog obscured her view, but this time she swam with
her faith intact. Somewhere behind the fog was
land. Not only was Florence Chadwick was the
first woman to swim the Catalina Channel; she beat
the men record by two hours.
The message is clear, you might not be able to see
the end of the tunnel, but it is there! So
decide that the goal you seek is there- even if you
can't see it. If you'll commit yourself to
your goal in spite of the fatigue and hurdles, your
chances of reaching the goal will
dramatically increase.

"Do not quit! Hundreds of times I have watched people
throw in the towel at the one-yard line while someone
else comes along and makes a fortune by just going that
extra yard."

Obesity and Fertility
Obese women are known to have more difficulty becoming pregnant and also are
more likely to miscarry. Excess weight could exert its effects either by acting
on the ovaries, which produce eggs, or on the endometrium, where the fertilized
egg implants. Additionally, overweight and/or obese (compared to normal weight)
females have a greater incidence of reproductive-related disorders, cancer of
the breast, cervix, ovary and uterus, adverse pregnancy outcome and
pregnancy-related disorders, reproductive endocrinologic problems, infertility
and urogynecologic disorders, to name a few.
As body mass index (BMI) increases, the
pregnancy success rate declines.
There are a significant number of overweight and
obese females who suffer infertility. This could be a consequence of irregular
menses and frequently anovular cycles. A large percentage of those infertile
patients have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), a disorder often associated
with obesity, chronic anovulation, and menstrual irregularity with or without
hyperandrogenism and hyperinsulinemia. Anovulation is also seen in patients with
a BMI > 30 due to abnormal secretion of hypothalamic GnRH, pituitary LH and FSH.
The hyperinsulinemia seen with an insulin resistant state without PCOS can
impact on fertility independently.
