Elena Hight: Olympic Snowboarder Silver Medalist Says “Enjoy and Be Passionate About What You Do”

Elena Hight is an American Olympic snowboarder. At 24 years, she is already a two-time Olympian in snowboard halfpipe. Elena became the first woman to land a 900 in competition at only 13-years old in 2002. In 2013 she became the first snowboarder to land a double backside alley-oop rodeo in Superpipe competition at the X Games in Aspen, Colorado.

In addition to snowboarding professionally, living an active, healthy lifestyle through sports and the outdoors has always been a priority of Elena’s. Surfing and cooking are two passions in her life. Her personality is often described as the All-American girl next door with an incredible athletic talent.

Elena Hight began her snowboard career on the hills of Bogus Basin, Idaho. In 1996, at age six, a child-size snowboard caught Elena’s eye when skiing with her father and sister.

After trying it, she never looked back. Elena quickly ingrained herself in the competition circuit a year later. In 2002, Hight became the first woman to land a 900 in competition at only 13-years old. Her back to back 900s became a signature aspect of her riding, spinning more than her fellow female competitors.

Since the debut as a professional athlete, Elena has gathered nearly a dozen more podium finishes at major events including the Winter X Games, US Grand Prix, Burton US Open, the Winter Dew Tour, Vans Cup and more. At just 16-years old, Elena represented the USA At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Hight finished sixth in the halfpipe event.

She finished 19th in the halfpipe at the FIS Snowboarding World Championships 2005 in Whistler, British Columbia. At the January 2010 Winter X Games XIV in Aspen, Colorado, Hight placed sixth in the Women’s Snowboard SuperPipe.

On January 26, 2010, Hight made the 2010 Winter Olympics US team. At the Olympics on February 18, 2010 on Vancouver’s Cypress Mountain, she finished 10th in the ladies’ halfpipe with a 2-run best score of 24.6. It was third best of the four American competitors (Hannah Teter, Kelly Clark, Gretchen Bleiler, and Hight), the same four who competed at the 2006 Winter Olympics. The 2012 season overall was a success with several podium finishes, including gold at the Grand Prix in Mammoth, silver at Winter X Games in Aspen, silver at X Games in Tignes France and gold at the US Open Snowboarding Championships in Stratton, Vt. In May 2012, while training with the U.S. snowboard team in Mammoth, Calif., Hight became the first woman to land a double backside alley-oop rodeo in a halfpipe. Off the snow, Hight designed a six-piece clothing collection with Volcom’s VOLCOMunity brand which launched that Fall. On January 26, 2013 at Winter X Games XVII, Hight became the first snowboarder, male or female, to land a double backside alley-oop rodeo during a halfpipe competition. The trick has taken women’s snowboarding progression to a new level. It also landed Hight a silver medal in Aspen and at X Games Tignes.

A six-episode web series entitled Hight Hopes, documents Hight’s personal journey to the Sochi Olympic Winter Games. In addition to snowboarding success, Hight also obtained her Associates Business degree from the University of Phoenix.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have started snowboarding at young age of six years and became the first woman to land a 900 in competition at only 13-years of age, later you reached the pinnacle of success by winning silver medal at Winter X Games Aspen 2013 in SuperPipe category in Snowboarding. What factors you consider were responsible that made you achieve that?

Ms. Elena Hight:

There are many things that have factored in to helping me be successful over the years. First off, I think a big part of it is just a love for the sport. I have dedicated so much hard work and time into snowboarding because I just love it and that has really turned help me turn it into a successful career. Secondly, I have had so much support from my family and sponsors that has truly made it possible for me to do what I do in snowboarding.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How did you feel when in May 2012, while training with the U.S. snowboard team in Mammoth, Calif, you became the first woman to land a double backside alley-oop rodeo in a halfpipe?

Ms. Elena Hight:

It was an amazing feeling to land my double for the first time. It truly made me believe that anything is possible.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine you shall like to share?

Ms. Elena Hight:

I do a lot of different types of training for snowboarding. I run, do yoga, surf, hike, bike, and have a strength and conditioning trainer that I work with. I have always wanted my training to benefit my snowboarding but also be fun so I try to incorporate as many different activities into my life as possible.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Elena Hight:

I just try to eat clean and find that when I am doing so I feel way better. I base my meals around organic fruits, vegetables, free range meats and eggs, and limit processed foods.

You have glowing skin and gorgeous hair. Do you take some kind of skin treatment to keep it young and glowing and secondly what you do to your hair to make them look so stunning?

Ms. Elena Hight:

Well thank you! I am a huge fan of coconut oil for skin and hair. I use it regularly because I just love how it makes my skin and hair feel.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Advice and motivational words to the inspiring and budding professional Snowboarding girls who all are your fans, they shall like to know from you, what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in field of Snowboarding ?

Ms. Elena Hight:

My advice is to just have fun. The success will come if you are enjoying yourself and truly passionate about what you are doing.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How did you feel and was there any special reason for so many win’s in this year?

Ms. Elena Hight:

2012 was definitely a highlight of my career. I think that the reason for it was that I was truly enjoying myself. Loving every minute of snowboarding and competing so that came through in my riding.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Who has been your greatest influencer and motivator in your success in the field of your career in competitive Snowboarding ?

Ms. Elena Hight:

I have been influenced by so many people in snowboarding since I started as a kid… Danny Kass, Gigi Ruff, Tara Dakidas, and Kelly Clark were some of my favorite riders growing up.

On January 26, 2013 at Winter X Games XVII, You became the first snowboarder, male or female, to land a double backside alley-oop rodeo during a halfpipe competition. Tell us about this endeavor of yours?

Ms. Elena Hight:

Learning a double cork was something that I had been focused on at the end of the previous season. My main goal of the 2012/2013 season was to land my double at X Games so when I was able to it was a dream come true.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Tell us about your six-episode web series entitled “Hight Hopes” and how was the experience working on it?

Ms. Elena Hight:

It was amazing to be able to work on Hight Hopes with Snowboarder Magazine. I wanted to share my real story of my trials and tribulations heading into the Olympics and after the Olympics with the rest of my season. It was super fun to be able to share something with my fans that they don’t get to see on tv.
