Long jumper Darya Klishina has proven time and again, that she is an unstoppable force. Being one of the 19 Russian athletes competing as a ‘neutral’ at the World Championships, she won the silver medal with a season-best jump of 7.00m.
With a stunning future ahead of her, let’s catch up with Darya Klishina on what inspires her, what challenges her and what makes her who she is, exclusively on Women Fitness.
Namita Nayyar:
At the age of 8, you began playing volleyball, and at thirteen changed your preference for athletics in specialty long jump. What motivated you to choose long jump?
Darya Klishina:
I started with athletics being 11 years old. At 13, I selected long jump. Actually, it was not my decision, rather my first coach as a professional estimated my physical potential. He also knew that I loved long jump. Thus, over those two years I tested many sports which created a great base for my future.

Namita Nayyar:
You are considered one of the most marketable female athletes of your time. What do you think made you achieve that?
Darya Klishina:
In my case it was a combination of three things which are vital for achieving good results: first, it is my team, without which there would have been no success; second, my trust in my team, my ability to work hard plus my drive to be a winner; third, support from my all my family and parents who stay close and support me in all circumstances.
Namita Nayyar:
In an interview you said “My Olympic dream almost turned into a nightmare.” We can only imagine the emotional roller coaster you went through, in spite of which you performed well. Share with us your journey at the Rio Games. What helped you stay focussed & determined?
Darya Klishina:
My Olympic experience and my ideas and expectations turned out to be in sharp contrast to each other. Yes, it was difficult, it was nerve-racking, bit insulting, but I am thankful for all that happened to me. It made me stronger and indomitable at all competitions which followed, in all complex situations. In other words: “All what does not kill us, makes us stronger”
Namita Nayyar:
What do you have for breakfast? How do you keep yourself fuelled during training sessions? 5 fovourite deserts you love to feast on?
Darya Klishina:
My most favorite breakfast before training is oat muesli with fresh berries, a spoon of honey and a cup of espresso. During training I would drink just water with a bit of lemon. As to desserts, my selection is not that big. Particularly while competing, it would be milk chocolate, mille feuille, cannoli (Italian dessert), panacota and all fresh fruits.
Namita Nayyar:
5 exercises that are a must for building a strong core.
Darya Klishina:
It would be difficult to refer just to five exercizes. To have strong and quick muscles you need a variation of movements. The most important thing is to achieve some balance: if you want to strengthen your belly muscles, have a combination for upper, central and lower belly. You can use medicine ball, physio ball or bosu ball. After that you should exercise your upper and lower back, then obliques, etc. As a result you will have a balanced and proportional body.
Namita Nayyar:
How would you define Women Fitness?
Darya Klishina:
I would say fitness is a part and parcel of today’s life. Nowdays women play an important role in our society. They are able to solve most complicated problems. More and more women become successful doctors, entrepreneurs, lawyers, diplomats. They have to be fit to live up to their new challenges.
Namita Nayyar:
After the difficult phase at the 2016 Olympic Games, how is your preparation going for the 2020 Games?
Darya Klishina:
Preparing for the Olympics is a complex and lengthy process, so I started to prepare for my next Olympics right after the Games in Rio were over. It seems 4 years between two stops is a lot. However, time flies. Losses and defeats motivate me a lot. After a loss I am ready to train even more. Because my strongest opponent is myself.
Namita Nayyar:
Tips to relax after a hectic training session?
Darya Klishina:
My personal relaxation and recreation is sleeping. Even short breaks between two training sessions can be used for this. On weekends I would go to beach and simply enjoy wet salty air and sound of waves.
Namita Nayyar:
On a day-off, what other sports you like to indulge in?
Darya Klishina:
If someone is playing beach volley, I will join in with pleasure. It is a great distraction from my routine. Or I can go for a long walk.
Namita Nayyar:
Playing outdoor sports can take a toll on both the hair and skin. How do you take care of them? Sunscreen you swear by?
Darya Klishina:
I am first a woman and then an athlete. Frankly, it is rather difficult to take care of yourself during an intensive training process. Not so much time. But every girl should take at least couple of minutes for herself. For my hair I use moisturizing masks and after I wash my hair I would use moisturizing oil.
I use sun protection cream for my face. But it kind of disappears during training. For this reason I use it twice a day. Vitamin E and light cream for my face. And twice a week I use alternatively cleaning and moisturizing masks.
Namita Nayyar:
As earlier said, you have been a victim of a doping case. What do you think needs to be done to protect innocent athletes from such issues in the future?
Darya Klishina:
In the first instance, athletes should be able to defend themselves. Everywhere and always one has to be careful about what you eat, drink, even simplest vitamins. If there is a question, just go and talk to your doc to prevent unpleasant situations.
Namita Nayyar:
Message for Women Fitness on our 19th Anniversary?
Darya Klishina:
It is not a dress which makes a woman beautiful, but rather a woman who makes a dress look great. Try to feel happy and healthy, because beauty is inside you. This will make you an attraction at each event.
