Chloé Dufour-Lapointe is a Canadian freestyle skier, who was the 2013 FIS World Champion in dual moguls with her winning run at the 2013 World Championships. Dufour-Lapointe was the runner-up and silver medalist at the FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships 2011 as well and placed fifth at the 2010 Olympic Games.

She won the silver medal at the 2014 Olympic Games behind her sister Justine and also took part in the recent PyeongChang 2018 Olympics with Justine.

Women Fitness President, Namita Nayyar recently spoke to the second sister, Chloe DuFour-Lapointe to learn more about her journey in to the world of skiing and bring to you her story.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You made your Olympic debut in 2010 as an 18-year old and ended up placing fifth in women’s moguls. You reached the pinnacle of success by becoming the silver medallist at the Olympics in 2014. Share with us your journey in the world of skiing.

Ms. Chloé Dufour-Lapointe:

Since I was a little girl, I always had the quality of ‘Dare to Dream’ and this really put me where I wanted to be. I’ve always been the youngest in an event to do that at my age. So when I did my first Olympics, I had this naiveness but at the same time I had no limit. I knew it was possible and I put all the hard work that I had to make my dream happen.

I remember being there and thinking let’s do this, this is your moment. I did my back flip up there which was very forward for girls to do at the Olympics. I was happy with what I did; I was youngest on the Olympic Team and fearless, just going for it.

In 2014, I had a drive, and I still have the drive. I think if you dream, it is possible. From that success, I have always had this thinking in my sport. You should always think like this, because it can be scary sometimes, but I always had the drive to dream and girls should always keep this in mind.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You were a double medalist at the 2007 World Junior Championships, winning gold in dual moguls and bronze in moguls when you were just 15, becoming an inspiration for thousands of sportsperson who look up to you. Provide us an insight into a day in your life.

Ms. Chloé Dufour-Lapointe:

I have always been a dreamer and since I was a kid, I never put limits on me. At the World Junior Championships, it was my first race as well and I was lucky that my sister was also there, so it was two of us.

I didn’t know how important this race was but I knew while I was skiing that I want to do good and to do that I should ski with my heart and do the best that I can do.

I remember in that race and every moment there, I had so much fun. I enjoyed every second of it and when I received the snowflake as the medal, it meant a lot. It kept me going as well to continue as it was paying now. My career has been step-by-step, I took every chance that I had and it was motivating me to continue and keep pushing.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How does it feel to be the 2014 Silver medalist at the Winter Olympics? Also, share with us your training and motivation that has helped you to become an Olympic Champion?

Ms. Chloé Dufour-Lapointe:

To be an Olympic Champion, it means the world to me. I remember receiving the silver medal, and all I could think about at that time was that every coach, every moment that I had worked hard, every tear on my cheek, every time my parents brought me to the race, every moment of joy, every single medal that I had won. It was a dream come true. It was a dream that I had since I had started out in this sport, since I watched Jennifer Heil wining the World Cup. For me it was the accomplishment that I always wanted.

It is not something that you can get without working, you have to work hard. And it’s fun to work hard, because you can see the results, you can see the improvements and to stick to the process. It’s true that it’s not always fun to go to the gym everyday, but I was lucky that I had my sisters along the way. The three of us motivate each other and push each other into our trainings.

Sometimes we do workouts that make us want to puke, but we really have to be in shape so we try to do more. We need to be strong as well as flexible. I don’t have a strict diet, but I love to eat well, I like to eat a good salad that I mix together, I prefer to eat gluten free, no milk. I think it is a combination of everything that is needed to become a silver medalist.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Winning involves a lot of determination and hard work, more so in the life of a sportswoman. What exercises comprise your fitness regime both on a daily basis & when you are preparing for competition?

Ms. Chloé Dufour-Lapointe:

We train 6 days a week and it has two circuits, two lowers and two uppers, so it’s pretty intense training but it’s short and sweet. For the rest of the day, we need to eat well so that we can recover.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Optimum nutrition is an integral part of the life of a sports person to stay fit and come from wear & tear. There is no doubt you too need to take special care of your diet? Do you follow a strict menu to stay healthy and physically fit? Enlist your top 5 energy boosters?

Ms. Chloé Dufour-Lapointe:

Like I said, I prefer gluten free and no dairy so often on the road, I bring my own gluten-free cereal and peanut butter. I really love to drink my bio-drink when I’m on the road or in the race. I really like to have my protein. On a World Cup tour, you have to stick with what you know works best for you.

I like to fuel with Super. I like to use my Biocell to recover, if I do not have time to eat, or some vegan option to make a poke bowl and I add some protein to that like shrimps. I try to stay with raw food most of the time. We can eat healthy with good taste these days. We learn how to use the veggies and fruits to make it good.

I do a healthy banana bread, which I sometimes make before travelling so I can have on the plane. I do not have a strict diet, but I know what is good for me and what my body will be happy with.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Being a professional athlete, you are a role model for many striving to make it their dream come true, provide us with some motivational words to help others climb up the ladder of success in this field?

Ms. Chloé Dufour-Lapointe:

For all the people who have a dream, the main thing is to always go back on your feet. You can fall once, twice or three times, it doesn’t matter, how many times you fall, because a champion always gets back on their feet and try it again, and do it again.

You must have the belief in yourself that you’re going to realize it one day. It comes with hard work and passion, and a lot of love for your sport, or anything that you want to do. Find the strength in you and you’re going to achieve what you love the most in life.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

At the Sochi Olympics in 2014, you, Justine, and Maxime all competed in the moguls’ event. This marked just the fifth time three siblings competed together at the same event in the Olympics. Tell us how does it feel to have your own sisters standing by you at all times and being in the same sport?

Ms. Chloé Dufour-Lapointe:

The year of the Olympics was very emotional. Justine had already qualified; Maxime and I were in the process of getting qualified. I did have some good results, so I knew I would be on the team, but Maxime needed to do a pull jump. I remember missing the finals, Maxime was in there, she skied so well, and she did the pull jump. I was going crazy, because I knew it was going to be such a big deal to have the three of us together at the Olympics.

For the three of us, it meant a lot, because since we were kids, we’ve always been together. We train together, we eat together, and we travel together. We need each other, because we help each other to rise up. So to be at the Olympics together, it was our casual competition mindset. It is a family dream as well, our parents raised the three of us, not in mind, that we’ll be Olympic Champions, but with the three of us having so much drive and dreams, it would have been hard to not be an Olympian.

Maxime was the one who started out in this sport, then I followed and then Justine followed, so it was pretty significant for the three of us to be at the Olympics. It’s a girl power!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

The past year has been a difficult one with you struggling to find your world-class form and your mother battling cancer. Through all the tough and difficult times, what was the driving force that has brought you where you are today?

Ms. Chloé Dufour-Lapointe:

The last year was not easy for us. I’m a pretty emotional person, so when last year, we knew that our mother had a cancer. I was on the World Cup, I thought I have to do this and I did it, but it was not enough, it was not my best. I was skiing, but in my mind I just wanted my mum to stay alive, to be there. So it was pretty rough. But we stuck together, and we’ve been through this cancer with our mum. During the summer, we helped her in going through the treatment. Justine and I were there for each other, because we didn’t want to cry in front of our mother, so we would cry on each other’s shoulders. But when we learnt that our mother was in recovery, so we decided let’s go to the Olympics, let’s do this.

But the truth is, I’m not a switch, because now I think it is harder to recover from that kind of injuries. But I gave my best, and the thing that got me through, to the Olympics, was my dream of being a third time Olympian, to represent my team. Maybe it wasn’t the performance that I imagined in my life and four year training, but I gave it my whole. You can never plan a cancer or something like that happening to you. So to manage, the best way that we can, it was the first time that we faced it, the cancer, so I think I did the best that I could. The one thing that drove me through was my dream to be an Olympian, to perform the best that I could and to give it all, because everytime that you give it all, you cannot be disappointed of yourself.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

With your motto “Live in the moment” and having performed so well throughout your career, who is your role model, inspiration, and motivator as an athlete?

Ms. Chloé Dufour-Lapointe:

My inspiration when I started was Jennifer Heil, she was in my mind. The power of the moguls ski athletes, I remember she was doing a 360 Degree mute and I thought this is what I want to do at the World Cup stage. I had a powerful image in my mind and I really stuck to it, throughout my career till this date. As well I have my mum, who is a very strong woman, she has been through a lot and yet she is driving us with the eye of the tiger. These two people are the biggest inspiration for me. And my sisters.

I really like to get inspired by people around me; I like to incorporate their good actions in my life, to be the best that I can be. It’s important that people get inspired by people around them, because each person has something to give to one another.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Women Fitness works relentlessly with a goal to reach out to women all over the world providing them with best in health, fitness, beauty & fashion. What do you wish to say about the website (Womenfitness.net) and message for our readers?

Ms. Chloé Dufour-Lapointe:

I think it’s always going to be ‘Dare To Dream’, because girls you can do everything you want, if you put all the hard work and if you believe in yourself. Also, it is very important to have a balanced life, starting with being healthy, dare to dream and you can be looking fashionably nice while on training. I don’t like to go to train if my outfit is not on point. It makes me feel powerful and I feel I get much more power to push me through the hard training.

Stick together girls; I am lucky I have two sisters. You can stick with your friends, enjoy with each other and push each other. It is not a competition, it’s the power of the girls. And a balance of all these things, will bring you where you want to be, which is a powerful woman. Just find your balance and keep going.
