International Yoga Instructor Chelsey Korus reveals her fitness secrets in a candid conversation with Namita Nayyar, President – Women Fitness. Catch up on her latest secrets!
Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have an experience of over 15 years of yoga teaching and 10 years of studies in the martial arts, acrobatics, and dance world. Your powerful and phenomenal journey as a Yoga Instructor has landed you on Live! with Kelly and Michael and PopSugar as well as Fitness, Shape, and Women’s Health Magazines. Tell us more about this incredible journey that took you to the world of fitness?
Ms. Chelsey Korus: Just reading this question makes me smile and bubbles up the feeling of being grateful within me for this path of exploration I have been on and continue to walk in this life. I am a student at heart and always will be. I have a passion for peeling back the layers, unpacking what’s there and seeking what is yet to be integrated—yet to be discovered fully within myself and more importantly how it relates to the world around me.
The further I get down this road of exploration, I realize that it’s not about “me” , but about us all. I see my work in this world through the lens of a servant, working to bring forth healing to all people everywhere. Healing that brings freedom. With freedom comes movement in body and with training, in the mind, and soon an awakening to your spirit— providing a first hand account of real wisdom that only you can behold because you have sought after it and found it yourself. It is powerful and life changing to the point where we all wake up a little more each day to the radiance that surrounds us RIGHT NOW. This is the path that I started those 15 years ago, and the same one I continue on 🙂

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You are a world famous AcroYoga Performer. So what exactly is AcroYoga? And how is it different from the regular Yoga exercises?
Ms. Chelsey Korus: Acroyoga is the practice of trust and connection. The work done on my yoga mat in my personal practice which prepares me for my work in the world. It brings me deeper into a sacred space of solitude, while lifting my eyes up and out towards a universe that I feel very connected to. When working in a partnership–your eyes are met by ONE person and that person will serve as your mirror. A mirror to your potential, your power and your strength. As well as a mirror to your communication skills, your ability to listen, and your patterns.. Meaning– the stuff we are working through on our mats, gets amplified in partner work, and it does not come in short poetic dharma talks. It comes in the form of a living human being, offering their hands and feet to support you and you’ve just gotta TRUST and GO! One learns quickly that pointing fingers won’t get you anywhere.
Just like we learned in yoga, we take responsibility for our thoughts and words and how they effect the space around us. Acroyogis work as a team and every failure is “we” and every victory is “we” never “me”. Naturally questions like “What can I do to support you better?” come out and it feels like a powerful shift. This practice of trust and connection has taught me to look someone in the eye, steady and grounded, and honestly say with confidence, “I got you.”
Ms. Namita Nayyar: Before becoming a yoga & fitness instructor, you have also been trained in martial arts, classical and modern dance, gymnastics, and acrobatics. How has your experience in all these other sports & activities helped you in learning and teaching Yoga?
Ms. Chelsey Korus: To me, yoga is the practice of finding union or “yoking” the body, mind, and spirit. So naturally, I would be led to other body-mind practices. Martial arts continues to teach me about discipline, while dance teaches me about uninhibited expression. Gymnastics and Acrobatics combines them both and pushes me to do “a little everyday.” I use all of these disciplines along with what I call “soul work” when creating a yoga class for my students. I feel now-a-days we can see the benefits in being multi-discipline when training the body, because that is the world we live in. We need disciple, self expression, soul work, and the freedom to chose what is needed on that day to live a full and awakened life!

Chelsey Korus on WomenFitness: Remember that self-doubt is as self-centered as self-inflation. Your obligation is to reach as deeply as you can and offer your unique and authentic gifts as bravely and beautifully as you’re able.
Ms. Namita Nayyar: What is your diet? Do you take a particular fixed regulated diet comprising of nutrients and vitamins to keep you in perfect health?
Ms. Chelsey Korus: I eat clean and local foods with an emphasis on as little “packaged foods” as possible. I take great pride in looking a farmer in the eye and paying them directly for their hard work. Truly, nothing gives me more pleasure and nothing comes close to the taste of a freshly picked cherry tomato in the summer or a raspberry straight from the source. I am a traveling yogi and acrobat, so most of my life is on the road and I supplement with granola bars and fruit in areas where I cannot find an organic grocer. I do not adhere to a single diet or regime, but work on staying balanced. Ginger is by far my secret weapon to ward off illness while on the road. It is the real deal and my body can handle A LOT of it 😉
Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have glowing skin and gorgeous hair. Do you take some kind of skin treatment to keep it young and glowing and secondly what do you do to your hair to make them look so stunning?
Ms. Chelsey Korus: Coconut oil!
Ms. Namita Nayyar: What according to you are the Top 3 Fitness Tips for women to start with a successful Yoga Practice?
Ms. Chelsey Korus: 1. Slow Down
2. Give yourself permission to TRY
3. Enjoy the moment— You will not be a beginner forever. In time you will have to add on more challenge to feel the way you do now, so enjoy exactly where you stand now. All the sanskrit words you don’t understand, the sweat rolling down your brow, and the sweet savasana twitches. This moment is yours and it’s BEAUTIFUL!

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have done photo shoots and have been featured in PopSugar, the Kelly and Michael Show, Prevention Magazine, Fitness Magazine, Shape Magazine and many more. How are you so body confident and advice to your compatriots?
Ms. Chelsey Korus: Honestly— body confidence has been a long time coming for me. I grew up with 5 girls in my house, so a positive body image was not always the easiest to cultivate. I remember the day on my yoga mat where my internal monologue switched from the “drill sergeant” telling me to push harder and reach higher to a nurturing yet strong mother’s voice saying “I love you and I’m so proud of you.” I remember stopping what I was doing and knelt down in wonder. Body confidence for me, comes from this voice within. My advice for my compatriots— listen to the voice within that believes without a doubt, you have come to live your fullest life and that story matters!
Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have thousands of followers of your fitness revolution “AWAKE with Chelsey Korus”. Tell us more about this endeavor of yours?
Ms. Chelsey Korus: The word AWAKE for me simply reminds me to stay ALIVE in every moment. To give myself permission to try (even if I won’t be the best.) To get quiet enough to hear the lesson in the struggle, and focus my eyes on the solution towards the next step. I fully recognize that I am no victim here, and that every moment I am entrusted with is here to help me grow. I believe there is a radiance that surrounds us all and if we had but eyes to see it, it would CAPTIVATE US! My mission is to awaken myself and teach everything I learn along the way so I may “be the change I wish to see in this world.”
Ms. Namita Nayyar: What pearls of wisdom can you give to the inspiring and budding fitness girls who all are your fans and would like to know from you for their climb to the ladder of success in the fitness and modeling industry?
Ms. Chelsey Korus: “Remember that self-doubt is as self-centered as self-inflation. Your obligation is to reach as deeply as you can and offer your unique and authentic gifts as bravely and beautifully as you’re able.”
