Bruna Kajiya full name is Bruna Kajiyabruna Kajiya. She is Brazilian World champion freestyle kitesurfer. Her favourite move is Powered Back Mobe. She was born in Vinhedo, São Paulo, Brazil. Her philosophy of life is learn from your difficulties, take the best of them an move forward. Her favourite food is my dad’s baked fish wrapped in banana leaf. World champion freestyle kite surfer Bruna Kajiya is an amazing ambassador for her sport, and is dedicated to getting more girls involved and on the water.
In one of her first competitions she attempted to do a trick to close to the beach with on shore winds & crashed head first on the sand. She had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance & had a neck brace for a week. That’s where she learned not to do tricks on shore wind with less than 3m from the beach.
Looking out of the window in Math class onto a busy kitesurfing beach, Bruna could not resist running down after school with her friends to give it a go. Having suffered a serious surfing accident she had been looking for another sport to fill that gap in her life, and she had found it right outside her school in Sao Paulo!
She continued her academic study in Maui where her riding progressed massively and she picked up wakestyle, which would change her style forever. On her return to Brazil the plan was to continue studying and go to university, luckily Bruna was convinced by her mother to try kiting at a professional level instead and she has never looked back since.
Having settled for second place three years in a row 2009 was the year Bruna’s determination finally paid off and she took the top spot on the PKRA world tour podium.
Today Bruna is known for her powered tricks and dedication to closing the gap between men and women’s kiting. She once said “I thought that my goal was to be world champion, that it would fulfill me as a professional. When I managed to be world champion in 2009 I realized that it didn’t really change anything. For me it’s about pushing the sport and making it go into another direction.”

Bruna Kajiya is Brazilian World Champion Freestyle Kitesurfer. She is winner of numerous world championships in freestyle kitesurfing. She is in conversation with Namita Nayyar President Women Fitness.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
Your interest in kitesurfing started while in school looking out of the window from your math’s class onto a busy kitesurfing beach, you could not resist running down after school with your friends to give it a go and later you reached the pinnacle of success in 2009, when you won PKRA World Tour overall championship. What factors you consider were responsible that made you achieve that?
Ms. Bruna Kajiya:
In order to become a World champion in most sports you need a combination of many factors working your way to get that combination of success. In my case my passion for the sport driven me to go further then what I expected to be possible, to try harder, to give my all. I could kite for hours on end trying one trick, wanting to do it so badly that it eventually worked out.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
You have career in competitive kitesurfing starting from 2007 when you won MOVISTAR Venezuela World Cup and till current year you went on to get 2nd position in Dakhla Kiteboarding World Cup 2014. During all these years you won numerous competition. You are nothing short of a phenomenon. Tell us how you are able to achieve the tenacity, perseverance and discipline over such a long number of years?
Ms. Bruna Kajiya:
I believe when you do something with your heart in it you manage to find strength and energy to go the extra length, that’s where my perseverance and determination come from. I pour all of me into it and the results come from that focus.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
You while in one of your first competitions you attempted to do a trick to close to the beach with on shore winds & crashed head first on the sand. You had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance & had a neck brace for a week. That’s where you learned not to do tricks on shore wind with less than 3m from the beach. How you were able to overcome such a physical injury/setback and what advice you can give to fellow sports person in a similar situation?
Ms. Bruna Kajiya:
On the heat of the competition, with the adrenaline pumping thru your veins sometimes you make bad judgments or forget about the risks involved in a extreme sport such as kiteboarding. I’m a person that always take safety first when it comes from kiting, we already practice a sport with risks, why make it more dangerous? So when training I always keep my distance from the beach and other people to avoid accidents.
An injury is always the nightmare of most athletes, especially when it comes together with an accident, being able to overcome that is a challenge. In order to perform well in freestyle you have to be a bit fearless and after an episode such as that one fear of having the same happen again is always there. You have to take it slow, regain your confidence and day after day, and only try the same trick once you feel you can do it, there’s a time that you just now it’s the right time to try it.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine you shall like to share?
Ms. Bruna Kajiya:
Apart from the time I spend training in the water I also do a special functional training developed by my trainer, it’s called Core 360. Depending on my competition schedule the training program varies a lot. But some exercises are always present, such as core training with the medicine ball and squats on unstable surfaces. For my sport you need strength but also a lot agility so most of my training program is focused on getting me strong, slim and quick,
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?
Ms. Bruna Kajiya:
I have a diet that isn’t strict on the amount of food intake but is strict on the quality. I’ve been on a gluten free diet for a few years now; I also prioritize alkaline foods such as veggies and fruits. My white sugar intake is very low for a few years, I’ve read a lot about it and how it can be not only highly addictive but also damaging for your health. When possible I always eat organic, of course since traveling so much that’s a very hard task.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:
You have glowing skin and gorgeous hair. Do you take some kind of skin treatment to keep it young and glowing and secondly what you do to your hair to make them look so stunning?
Ms. Bruna Kajiya:
For my skin I make sure I protect it well when going to the water, I can be exposed to the sun for 5-6 hours a day. For that I use a sunscreen from Skinceuticals factor 50, its only minerals so it’s a good option for your skin, especially if you have oily skin. In order to make it last longer in the water I apply another sunscreen from Avene factor 50 in the form of a compact powder. This way I can be hours in the water without worrying.
My hair trick is coconut oil, I protect my hair before going in the water with it. Apart from hydrating it, giving an amazing glow it also blocls the salt water from going in my hair and damaging it.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
Advice and motivational words to our inspiring and budding professional kitesurfing girls who all are your fans, what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in the field of kitesurfing ?
Ms. Bruna Kajiya:
One of the most important things is to find an ideal location for practicing, make sure you invest in going to one of the spots in the world where the wind blows almost everyday and you get to ride constantly. One of the big challenges to progress in kiting is waiting for wind, this breaks the momentum of the learning process. Also respect your body; learn how to listen to it. Kiteboarding is a sport with a lot of injuries, if you push too hard the chances of hurting yourself is high and that might put a bump on the start of your career.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
You won O’neill Kitesurf World Cup The Hague 2012. Elaborate on this win of yours and how did you feel before and after winning this title?
Ms. Bruna Kajiya:
A win always feels amazing but also each of them is incredibly unique, depending of what you’ve been thru to be there. The win in The Hague had a special taste, I was coming from a second place on a previews competition where I felt I got misjudged on my scores and that hit me strong. For a bit I was down about it, but one day I stood up and decided I was going to train extra hard to make sure that wouldn’t happen on the next competition, that there would be no doubt on the judges side. So going there and performing to have a clean win was a big achievement for me.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
You while searching the most remote and interesting locations to take kiteboarding, together with Red Bull you found a salt platform in the middle of the ocean. Tell us about this unique experience of kitesurfing on the salt?
Ms. Bruna Kajiya:
Kiteboarding on salt was such an incredible project, the feeling of going somewhere were kitesurfing had never been is very exiting. To be the pioneer n something, break paradigms, try something new. You face totally difference challenges, the salt melted and hardened so it was sharp, every fall took a bit of your skin and blood dripped, every movement had to be calculated with extra care because if you fall you hit a surface as hard and the floor. On top of that we were on a platform on the middle of the ocean, such a beautiful scenery, everywhere you looked was deep blue water and right in the middle that gigantic island of salt.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:
Who has been your greatest influence and motivator in your success in the field of kitesurfing ?
Ms. Bruna Kajiya:
All my family always supported me a lot, but the key person that made all of this possible was my mom. She was my biggest motivator, when I was about to go into University she told me I was too young for that, that I should travel some more and do what I loved. She paid for my first world tour competition and told me I was great, that I would do well. That gave me the confidence and motivation to go and I finished 3rd. From there on I knew what I wanted to do.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
