Brianne McLaughlin is an exceptionally talented American Ice Hockey goaltender and twice Olympic Silver medalist. She has won twice Gold and one silver in IIHF World Women’s Ice Hockey Championships. She is in conversation with Namita Nayyar President Women Fitness.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
You played softball, basketball, volleyball and ran track at Elyria Catholic High School and later played ice hockey for four years (2006 to 2009) at Robert Morris Colonials women’s ice hockey program. You reached the pinnacle of success in the sports of Ice hockey on winning Silver in 2010 Olympic Games at Vancouver and also in 2014 Olympic Games at Sochi. What factors you consider were responsible that made you achieve that?
Ms. Brianne Mclaughlin:
I’ve always loved sports my whole life. If it was offered in my town, I wanted to play. I was lucky enough to have parents that always encouraged my active lifestyle. Having an older brother as well, I needed to keep up so I developed a pretty strong competitiveness in sports or any other competition. As I got older the competitiveness was what was so fun about sports because I always had goals for myself to achieve. There is no better feeling than accomplishing something you’re passionate
about and worked so hard for. I surrounded myself with people who were also driven in their own goals and encouraging of mine. This always kept my life in line and going in the direction I dreamed of.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
You have selected a sport which is a team sport and requires a lot of cohesiveness and family feeling between the players of the side to finally succeed, how do you achieve that?
Ms. Brianne Mclaughlin:
Being on a team with over 20 girls isn’t always the easiest! This is something we really educate ourselves on to ensure we always are a family. When situations come up we are extremely respectful of one another and handle it right away in the way we see fits for the better of the team. We do a lot of team building and over the years it has really changed the whole environment to such an amazing group. We embodied a team first attitude and the quicker we bought into this the faster we were successful.
It’s so fun to be apart of a team that you don’t ever have to wonder if they’re doing the right things or working hard. Everyone is accountable and driven to be better.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine you shall like to share?
Ms. Brianne Mclaughlin:
Hockey is a very explosive sport. We do a lot of one legged exercises, core work, and Olympic lifts. Cardio days are obviously thrown in there in between power days. As a goalie I also mix in some hand eye coordination drills to keep my eyes sharp! I usually work out 5 days a week with 2 of the days focusing on more cardio things and adding injury prevention exercises.
Ms. Namita Nayyar:
Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?
Ms. Brianne Mclaughlin:
I don’t have a really strict diet. I am lucky enough to have a pretty high metabolism so for me it’s not my biggest focus as far as weight goes. However with how much we train, it’s so important to make sure we’re getting the right nutrition at the right times for training and recovery. We make sure our meals are balanced and are snacking on our fruits, veggies, nuts, etc throughout the day.
