Barre Belles is the ballet-inspired workout created by Alison Hess. Choreographed at 160bpm, it is sure to have you sweating and shaking.
“barre workouts,” which are designed to give you a long, lean, physique, are all the rage these days. Celebrities like Madonna and Kelly Ripa have been raving about them and the popularity has spread. Barre studios are popping up in every major city across the world- and even right here at Tilton Fitness with Barre Belles! According to The Home Dweller, while all barre workouts differ, most methods incorporate exercises done at a ballet barre, combining elements from ballet, Pilates, and yoga.
One reason for the success of barre workouts is that they provide real results. With consistency, participants find that their bodies become slimmer and more “chiseled.” For optimal weight loss and results, combine your barre workouts- up to three times a week and a rest day in between- with a few cardio sessions and a healthy diet. Barre workouts are not meant to be your “cardio” portion of your training program, but more of your lifting and toning.
Barre workouts help an individual achieve a “dancer’s body” — strong, sleek, tight and toned. How? Barre Belles uses body weight exercises and/or low weights with high repetitions, increasing muscle endurance and cardiovascular strength. Sometimes props will be used, such as Pilates balls and yoga blocks for example. The ballet-inspired workout focuses on incredibly efficient, tiny movements. You will be challenged to find your “working zone” or “sweet spot,” and will remain there while you move within an inch up and down. As a result, your heart rate will elevate and you can expect to sweat.
The exercises will target core stability and balance, as well as have you using muscles that are not normally activated with traditional exercise. Focus during class is on alignment and body position, working in “turn-out”- an external rotation of the legs from the hips- and targeting the muscles known collectively as the lateral rotators of the hip- the piriformis, gemellus superior, obturator internus, gemellus inferior, obturator externus, and quadrates femoris. This makes barre classes, like Barre Belles, a fabulous compliment to any exercise regiment.
The exercises in a barre class challenge your core stability and balance. If you are aware of your alignment (which you will constantly be reminded of in a Barre Belles class… “pull your belly in”… “tack your navel to your spine”….), you will be challenging your core for the duration. The ballet-inspired workout focuses on incredibly efficient, tiny movements. You will be challenged to find your “working zone” or “sweet spot” and remaining there while you move an inch down and back up, which will have your heart rate elevated and your forehead glistening in moments!

Barre Body is a complete body workout fusing ballet barre conditioning, yoga and pilates.
Signature Barre Body, Barre Moves and Barre Tone classes are designed to tone your entire body, creating longer, leaner muscles. Ballet & pilates exercises at the barre and on the mat tone your muscles, while complementary yoga postures lengthen and shape your muscles (think long & lean like a ballet dancer!)
The interval training format (raising and lowering the heart rate) means that you get fast results, fat burning is increased and your metabolism is boosted for hours after your workout. Barre Body works your entire body, giving special attention to the lesser used muscles, resulting in a total body toning effect.
It’s fun (and addictive when you see how quickly it shapes your body). You only need to do 3-4 classes a week to see great results.
Inspired by the Lotte Berk Method and methods derived from it such as Bar Method, Core Fusion and Physique 57, Barre Body is differentiated from other barre programs by its strong emphasis on vinyasa yoga to bring heat into the body and increase flexibility. The incorporation of yoga into the classes also adds a fluid element, creating a class that feels flowing and seamless.
