Ms. Namita Nayyar: You graduated from high school at the age of 15, after which you joined the Wilhelmina Modeling Agency and modeled for ‘Seventeen’. You first gained prominence in 2007 as Eden Lord on the FX television series Nip/Tuck, and later in MyNetworkTV telenovela American Heiress. You reached the pinnacle of success for your role in the CW series 90210. Tell us about your journey that took you to where you are now in the world of acting?
Ms. AnnaLynne McCord: The ambiguous ‘they’ would say I had an overnight success 10 years in the making. There were a lot of “no’s” before I ever heard a “yes”. People would frequently ask me what was my “Plan B”. To which my arrogant younger self would reply, “My Plan B is to make sure Plan A never fails.”
I’m currently thankful for my youthful naïveté and invincible sensibilities, they brought me through trials and over obstacles one with lesser blind faith perhaps could not have surmounted.
I have recently begun to draw once more from that well-spring of confidence; seeking wisdom from that younger me as I look to make some drastic changes in my career and personal life in this new year. Concerning my “journey up until this point”, I gained notoriety initially from my time spent on Ryan Murphy’s Nip/Tuck. My experience there was superb. It’s such a wonderful thing working with elite talent on an acclaimed show.
I went into 90210 a tad spoiled. I came from what was a very well oiled machine (Nip/Tuck having been in their 5th season at that point). And there were certain things I had come to expect. The iconic reboot barely held a candle to my previous experience. However, it was a learning curve and I’m very grateful for it.
As I now reevaluate my career choice and what I want for the future I have to say one project that made acting worthwhile to me was a tiny, cult film called Excision, directed by Richard Bates, Jr..
“Ricky”, as I call him, afforded me the opportunity to bare my soul playing his delightfully disturbed anti-heroine “Pauline”. Ricky and I would go on to debut Excision at Sundance, win awards and visit multiple festivals, but the bond created between director and actress on that gut-wrenchingly, amazingly, terrifying ride that was the making of Excision has solidified a friendship for life. 3-6AM phones calls because we’re insomniacs. Crazed text message conversations which last 4 hours. You name it. Our strange little connection is why “the biz” can be one of the coolest places on earth to work in. We’re very lucky.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have selected a profession of being an actress that requires a lot of hard labor, technical soundness and excellence in different faculties to finally succeed, how do you achieve that?
Ms. AnnaLynne McCord: I’ve gone about it in a lot of ways and as I have sought growth I’ve witnessed my process grow. For me, now, it’s all about getting as real as possible. I’m honest to a fault. The way I see it, I’d rather piss you off and you know where you stand then be a part of perpetuating the lies our society disguises under the label ‘politeness’.
Ms. Namita Nayyar: You as a filmmaker has acted, written, produced and directed the film “I CHOOSE ” . Your goal has been to create a thought-provoking depiction of the very basic human right: “free will”.Tell us about this endeavor of yours?
Ms. AnnaLynne McCord: “I Choose” was certainly a passion project for me. The idea came to me in the shower, where many of my ideas come from! I wanted to address several things in my own life that I felt were relevant to more than just me.
I care deeply for the fight to end human-trafficking and slavery. I believe slavery touches 7 billion of us. Slavery of the mind is the damning of our planet. We adhere to the judgments of our mind without checking in on our soul. Our spirit/soul/consciousness (whatever you believe) knows what is right for us, but we are bound and chained to archaic belief systems passed down through the ages which we just agree to because we don’t know we can choose to choose not to.
The subliminal messaging of the film is simple: slavery is the absent of choice. When I say anything following “I should” it’s slavery. The film also highlights my desire to free our planet of the begrudging relationship the majority has with one of our most basic instincts: the chemical drive to procreate. Sex.
It is my belief that the pushing down and suppressing of natural instincts gives way to growing deviant behaviors. What is suppressed will be expressed. Of course, my hope was to shove all of this into a 10-minute, silent, black and white film. Who knows if it was conveyed. Filmmaking and watching is very subjective. But that is the first of many story-telling gifts I hope to share with this beautiful world of ours.
Ms. AnnaLynne McCord: In direct correlation with my short film I am writing for SheraMag.com to keep a conversation going about my desire to inspire the globe to question the “shoulds” and to remember to choose to choose.
Every week SheRa and I tweet out a topic for submissions. Readers can ask questions and each Friday I submit The Naked Truth with AnnaLynne. It’s a fun way to stay connected and talk about things that I genuinely feel are of merit, but perhaps aren’t discussed as openly as they can be.
Ms. Namita Nayyar: What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine you shall like to share?
Ms. AnnaLynne McCord: I always preface my answer to this question with the fact that a huge percentage of a person’s aesthetic is genetic. Working out for the sake of working out is not my thing. But I love Tae Kwon Do, yoga and a healthy love-life to cover muscle training, flexibility and cardio, respectively.
Ms. Namita Nayyar: Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?
Ms. AnnaLynne McCord: I do not have a strict diet, but most people aren’t aware of the fact that allergies to food is one of the big causes associated with obesity. I had no idea I was allergic to gluten. I have since cut that out and it has altered the look of my body. It appears more tone without having changed anything else in my regimen.

Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have glowing skin and gorgeous hair. Do you take some kind of skin treatment to keep it young and glowing and secondly what you do to your hair to make them look so stunning?
Ms. AnnaLynne McCord: Thank you! My skin has been and up and down battle. Again, genetics. I suffer from adult acne. I love the all natural line Arcona. The cranberry scrub is incredible. I use Palm oil or Macadamia nut oil in my hair. It helps maintain a healthy glow and my curly hair drinks it right up.
Ms. Namita Nayyar: Advice and motivational words for the inspiring and budding actresses who all are your fans, what should they do for their climb to the ladder of success in field of acting?
Ms. AnnaLynne McCord:
First piece of advice: Don’t become an actress!!
If you’re still serious about it…
Picture your whole life working as an actor without ever making a dime.
If you’re still serious about it…
Study the greats. Stanislavsky required his protégés to sit front row for 18 months watching all the great actors in all the great plays before he even allowed them on stage.
If you’re still serious about it…
Enroll in drama school.
And finally if you haven’t been deterred by all my negativity you just might have what it takes to deal with the inevitable rejection in order to survive and perhaps even thrive in this crazy business!
Break a leg!
Ms. Namita Nayyar: Who has been your inspiration and motivation that led you to your success in the world of acting?
Ms. AnnaLynne McCord: There are many good actors both before and amongst us, but to be great according to me requires other-worldly qualities which I find to be quite rare.
Sir Anthony Hopkins is by far my favorite living actor. (Marlon Brando is my beloved). Hopkins offers the darkest most twisted of villains not merely humanity but a kind of charisma that can often have his audience rooting for him against the protagonist in the story. This is just one element of the many truly remarkable qualities he brings to our screens. I adore him.
Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have been associated with St. Bernard Project, The New Somaly Fund, Artists for Peace and Justice and many other charities. These associations have been dear to your heart, tell us how you have been able to achieve and quench your thirst of giving back to the society through this endeavor of yours?
Ms. AnnaLynne McCord: New Somaly Fund (www.newsomalyfund.org) and St. Bernard Project (www.stbernardproject.org) have been my passion projects for some time now. St. Bernard Project helps survivors of Katrina return to their homes and receive the care they so desperately need.
The project also was the first organization of its kind to provide free mental health care for both survivors of Katrina and the Gulf Oil Spill. New Somaly Fund supports a team on the ground in Cambodia who are dedicated to the fight to end sex trafficking and sexualized violence against women in South East Asia.
The grassroots program facilitates a three-step process including the rescue, rehabilitation and reintegration into society of human-trafficking survivors. I have worked closely with the founder former slavery victim, Somaly Mam and the young girls and women she has empowered for almost 6 years now. Their resilience, strength and sense of hope saved me from a dark period in my life when I too was imprisoned, but in my mind.
AnnaLynne McCord on WomenFitness: I love this site, as it is for the women and by the women. It is a platform for encouraging women to be the best humans we can be. Fitness is not just body shape it’s a lifestyle and the site does a remarkable job covering pretty much everything as is left of what women are concerned with. I think it’s really great. |
Ms. Namita Nayyar: You are a leading actress, model, writer, director, producer, and philanthropist. How you manage such a remarkable multi-dimensional lifestyle?
Ms. Namita Nayyar: You have won the Hollywood Life Young Hollywood Superstar of Tomorrow award in 2009. In 2010, you won a Breakthrough of the Year Award in the category of “Breakthrough Standout Performance”. You also won best actress at the Malaga International Week of Fantastic Cinema in 2012 and got second place for best actress at the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards in 2013. What responsibility these awards bestow upon you in your future efforts and activities in the field of acting?
Ms. AnnaLynne McCord: I feel very humbled and honored for all of the response. I was just a little 9 year old kid from the middle of nowhere Georgia with a “pipe dream” to be an actress and it came true. I feel very blessed. Regarding the responsibility I feel …It is to myself, to always, forever, as long as I live make sure I’m first and foremost at peace and happy with my career decisions and that I work up to the standard I know I’m capable of achieving. I don’t abide by anyone else’s code, just mine. That is my responsibility.
Ms. Namita Nayyar: You are considered as one of the most beautiful women on this planet. You have been ranked in the “TV’s 100 Sexiest Women of 2010 and also in 2011” list. You were selected in the 2009 Maxim list of Hot 100 Women and also Voted in the 2009 FHM list of “100 Sexiest Women in the World”. How do you feel on these achievements of yours?
Ms. AnnaLynne McCord: I feel like I have absolutely, 100% nothing to do with them. But, thank you never the less. For a Star Wars nerd who loved math and recently wrote a science fiction novel it never gets old hearing that people couldn’t peg you more inaccurately. :)) I don’t mind.
Ms. Namita Nayyar: What you wish to say about the website Womenfitness.net and message for its visitors?
Ms. AnnaLynne McCord: I love seeing women empowering other women. We often grow up conditioned by society that other women are our sworn enemy and we sadly cut one another down when we could stand as a united front having each other’s backs.
I love this site, as it is for the women and by the women. It is a platform for encouraging women to be the best humans we can be. Fitness is not just body shape it’s a lifestyle and the site does a remarkable job covering pretty much everything as is left of what women are concerned with. I think it’s really great.
