Andrea Montalvo — famously known as Andrea Ager or “AGERBOMB” is a CrossFit coach and athlete, who teaches all over the world through her own seminars.
Women Fitness recently caught up with the spectacular personal trainer and spoke to her about what it takes to be a CrossFit athlete. Let’s find out!
Namita Nayyar:
Define CrossFit, out of your experience, for women of today?
Andrea Montalvo:
CrossFit, is a strength and conditioning program that is changing the world and empowering women everywhere! It is a more than just a popular fitness fad, it is here to stay. I believe that there is nothing that can represent the highs and lows of life than the journey of strength training, presenting challenges, goals and setting out to accomplish those goals!
Namita Nayyar:
Your Instagram speaks out ‘AgerBomb’, what does that mean?
Andrea Montalvo:
“AgerBomb” is my nickname in the fitness world. I made that my Instagram handle when I got my account in 2012 and it’s been a part of my brand since then. Even announcers at regionals when I would be pulling ahead during competitions would say, “Heeerrrre comes AgerBomb!” I got married this year so I have changed my last name but in CrossFit people still use my maiden name which is Andrea Ager.

Namita Nayyar:
If not a CrossFit Athlete, what would you be doing?
Andrea Montalvo:
If I was not working out and teaching people how to workout for a living I would be a firefighter or a marriage counselor…. or a motivational speaker! I have always dreamt of making a huge impact in the community… now I imagine later in life I’ll shift towards Christian Marriage Counseling. I believe that marriage is a gift from God, and the progression of faith and relationships have truly blessed me.
Namita Nayyar:
What is your workout routine on daily basis, list your 5 favourite fitness blasters?
Andrea Montalvo:
I lift very heavy! Each day I try to challenge myself in a big lift whether that’s a squat, a deadlift or a press. Sometimes I add olympic lifting into that like the snatch and clean and jerk which requires a lot of practice and skill. They never get boring (that’s the best part!) I then add in some body weight movements like pull-ups, sit-ups, handstand holds, and maybe even a cardio machine like a rower or bike.
Namita Nayyar:
To perform the best you need to fuel your body well too, what according to you should comprise a healthy breakfast meal? Also, what snacks do you like to munch on during or post training? Any workout supplement you stick to?
Andrea Montalvo:
I actually skip breakfast most days because I do intermittent fasting! It’s a fancy way to say that you don’t eat until 1 pm most days. I personally have really liked having a “feeding window” they call it between 12:00-8:00pm, and then fasting for 16 hours. Pre and post-workout I like to have fruit, carrots with hummus or a protein bar or shake. Building lean muscle is my constant goal, and what I strive for in my nutrition. I love Flyte Supplements and am totally aligned with their vision, if you haven’t tried it yet get their birthday cake protein. Yum.
Namita Nayyar:
Your biggest CrossFit inspiration?
Andrea Montalvo:
Annie Thorsdottir! She is a constant in the sport of CrossFit, she’s been around forever, and is so highly gifted. She has a humble but persistent approach.
Namita Nayyar:
A piece of advice for aspiring CrossFit Athletes?
Andrea Montalvo:
My advice for aspiring CrossFitters is to focus! Take class everyday, the key is consistency. It’s all about just showing up and trusting both the programming at your gym and the knowledge of your coaches. They have your safety and best interest at heart, and they want you to succeed as much as you do!
Namita Nayyar:
5 exercises women can do while travelling to stay fit?
Andrea Montalvo:
Lunges, squats, dips, planks, and mountain climbers.
Namita Nayyar:
How would you define Women Fitness? Share a word of inspiration?
Andrea Montalvo:
I would define Women Fitness as a voice for progress! Working out and lifting is a vital part of my life, and my life’s work is showing my friends and clients how to move well, and how to become FIT and STRONG!
Namita Nayyar:
What are your fitness goals for 2019?
Andrea Montalvo:
My fitness goals for 2019 are to get a personal record on my clean and jerk and deadlift! Those are two things I’ve been working on for years, and beside that I’d like to work in a few more outdoor running sessions per week.
Namita Nayyar:
3 tips for best social media selfies?
Andrea Montalvo:
Put the camera above you, so you can capture more! Use the app, “snapseed” to make pictures brighter… I always end up in a dark room somehow. And also, be overall grateful – that will help you show more joy!
Namita Nayyar:
One cheat meal you cannot drop out?
Andrea Montalvo:
This may seem lame but I love Brussel spouts with all the works! Cheese, salt, pepper, maybe some bacon, I mean come on doesn’t that sound amazing? And you’re getting your greens in so it’s like perfect.
Namita Nayyar:
Over doing anything can take its toll on the body. How important it is to relax & how do you relax after a hectic training session?
Andrea Montalvo:
I relax by drinking hot tea at night, putting my feet up and chilling to good worship music. This may seem a little extreme but I have to do this at night or else I can’t wind down for sleep. I tend to be a really high-strung person and that means I wake up with a lot of energy but then by the night time I need to lower the cortisol and truly wind down!
Namita Nayyar:
What is your biggest accomplishment?
Andrea Montalvo:
My biggest accomplishment is making it to the CrossFit Games in 2016 with a dedicated team of athletes from all over the world! We won our big regionals competition having a strong and skilled presence over the other North East athletes we were competing against. But then when it got to the level of ESPN and throwing down against the best of the best, we really had to be prepared! We placed 4th worldwide that year, and our last event was climbing up a wall with a set of wooden pegs (which is like basically all upper body) and thrusters which are a barbell movement with a squat and a press. Feeling victorious with a group of friends is the best feeling in the world.
Namita Nayyar:
Message for Women Fitness.
Andrea Montalvo:
My message is to keep inspiring women to pursue a life of health! It’s a really important message to devote content to! People go through this life now, looking for a niche, a brand, a certain perspective that they can go all into… but being well-rounded is so important. Pursuing character, striving to be a better version of youself and getting the most out of life is what it’s all about.
